Hi I have a custom 8ft mini mal single fin coming to me for the flat days here at trigg… This is my first single fin, currently ride 6ft thruster shortboard, so unsure of single fin sizes…??? Is a 8" single fin the go for 8ft mal??
Cheers.

Boardlength in foot = finlength in inch
It’s a good point to start from and playing with setups…
Awesome thanks for that…
Go at least 8". Get a 4a greenough, enough drive, but still manouverable.
Cheers beerfan pretty excited to go single fin, especially for small surf…
I got one at Zak surfboards not long ago if that’s close?. The 4a will suit if you’re used to a thruster. A dolphin might feel a little stiff. Give it time to get the hang of it, as it won’t surf like you’re used to, but once you’re used to it, you’ll love the smooth drivy twang. I do anyway haha.
One half the tail width, plus one inch, is a good rule of thumb to establish fin height. Not what I use, but some others do. It will surely get you ‘‘in the ball park.’’ There is WAY MORE to fin selection than just the depth of the fin. Don’t even get me started! Use an FU, or similar 10’’ fin box, so that you can adjust the fin position fore and aft, for fine tuning.
experiment some!
How are the hatchet single fins? I ride mostly quad biscuits and fishes and, just like the op, shaped a 7’8" funboard single fin.
