Single fin won't fit in box??

Hi everyone,

So i just picked up my brand new 6’0" Moss Research “Spacecake” single fin and I must be retarded because I can not get the fin to sit flush in the box. I have sanded every face of the fin (made by Jake Moss) and it still will not go. I don’t want to sand the fin too much and have a loose fit so I figured I would ask you guys on here because I feel like I am missing something. The fin feels like it hits something just before it sits flush, and no matter where I sanded, the fin did not get closer to sitting flush so I figured it must be something else. Any help/ideas/experience would be much appreciated. Thanks

measure the depth of the box and the height of the fin.   Does it feel like its hitting something, or is it just a very tight fit?  Have you tried a different fin?  If so, does it go all the way down?

check pin placement in front of fin at base-compare to one that fits. also, compare depth of base to one that fits. you may have to relocate the pin or simply sand some base away at the underside of base.

matt is on the right track. Quite often, a fin won’t set flush at the rear because the pin is in the wrong spot. Grinding about 1/8" or less off the base usually corrects this.

Subsitute front for rear in my reply. Your fin has the reverse setup with the pin at the back.

All this is good advice.  However, my recommendation is that

you go back and check the box again with a flashlight or bright

light.  Look for resin drips in the box or look at the bottom of the

box to see if it is warped from too hot an install.  A chisel will remove

a minor amount of material or drips and let the fin set down further.

I check all my longboards before delivery when I get them back from the glass

shop and almost always the fit is the box, not the fin.  Also, did you

try to screw down the fin?  The picture doesn't tell much.  If you have

a really tight fit, use a piece of wood and a hammer to tap on the tang.

If you are just hand fitting, you might find this will work.  Better tight now

and not loose later!

I checked for resin in the box and it all looks really clean. The weird thing is if I don’t put the pin through the slot I can get the whole front half of the fin into the box. And I can get the back half in fine, but when I lower the front down it just wont go. It is definately hitting something, I don’t want to hit it or force it in too hard… it is a brand new board. Should I just try and sand more off the base?

Got it! I had to sand off quite a bit from the base but it fits flush now, thanks for all the help!

Actually now I feel more retarded because I sanded off too much on the sides and now it wiggles even when tightened. Any ideas about that?

use a bisness card as a shimm on the sides of the fin.

try a plastic produce bag - fold it several times (as needed for a snug fit) lay it across the opening, rotate the fin into where you want it, trim off what remains

Might be a pain but i have had to glass a layer of 4oz on the base of a fin before ( one on each side ). The finbox was 1/8'' wider than the fin, so i added the glass, then sanded til it fit right. You can try the business card/packer, but eventually it'll wear away. Nothing quite so annoying as a wobbling fin IMHO.

Show us pics of the board please!!

I think I’m going to have to just put a piece of glass on there sometime this weekend. Here are some pics, Ill get some better ones when its not raining. The board is the first single fin I’ve ever owned so I can’t wait to get some hollow waves and try it out. The rails are very sharp for the back 1/2 of the board, and the wings are also something Ive never really seen. They are really thin and feel like they will hold very well on a steep wave.

I have that problem with fins all the time. I usually check the slot, then check the fin. I sand the sides of the fin a little to get it to slide down. A little at a time till it fits. I rarely mess with the depth of the fin, just the sides. If anything, I have rounded the fin just under the pin, but that’s only if I can’t get the pin to go into the box at all.

You might be able to just put a coat of uv sanding resin on the sides then sand it. Shouldn’t take too long if the sun is shining. Then you can get out and surf.

that is a sweet board... welcome to Swaylocks Slomotion

Clear pacing tape will snug up that wobbly fin

add layers as needed

Sweet!!
