ok guys, now that ive figured out WHERE to place the trailer fin with side fins, ive noticed fcs has alot of different types/sizes of side fins…they give descriptions of each which is very helpful, but dont tell you what size center fin to use???is there any set rule to go by as to the size of the center fin vs. size of the sidefins??or, as im learning, nothings set in stone??at present, i have gx side fins with a 7.5" center fin which the company recommends, and it works well…but i saw a set of g5’s(cool american flag logo, and besides if you buy a set 10.00 goes to the red cross…how juvenile huh??/hahahlolo)that id like to get, but dont know what size center fin to use…somethin tell me its all trial and error…thanks again everyone for your help…jerry t.
I’ve had great results with an 8.5" center (on my 9’3"). A 7.5" sounds a little “slippery” to me, but just my opinion. You’ll probably feel a little more drive (with the 8.5") than your 7.5". You could maybe go as large as 9" but you’ll start running into problems with drag. I’ve even tried my 10-inch fin with side bites, just to see…really bad drag. Like driving a Caddy without power steering.

Do you have a fin box or FCS plugs for your center fin? I use a 6.0 or 6.2(my own designs) center fin in a box, they work fine with no slippage. One of my friends uses a 5.5 and loves it.We’ve even put thruster fin set ups on longboards that work great.

I’ve surfed plenty of waves with a 4.75" center fin set back on a 9’6" Eaton long board. When conditions get much overhead, a 7" center fin works pretty good and for a 50 yard bottom turn, a 9" DT cutaway. It has the old 3 3/4" O’fishl side bites - a favorite board.
