SJ/Derek Hynd Interview

I know a lot of us read Surfer’s Journal already…the latest issue (Vol. 11 No. 1) came in my mail on 2-10-02 and has a gem of an interview with Derek Hynd. Among other interesting things it gives his take on the last 40 years of surfboard design in great detail. I’d say it’s a “Must read” for this group. Heads up!

Speaking of magazines… Nels, first I want to comliment you on your editorials on Vagabondsurf.com. They are great, the whole site was a treat to go through piece by piece. Next, howcum you get your SJ way befor I do? You got connections? Anyway, I look forward to reading the next one. A friend passed me a very interesting magazine, “The Surfer’s Path” from the UK. Very nice work and some obscure spots are noted. The issue Was Dec/Jan 2002 and it too had some Derek Hynd commentary based around a Hebridean Surf Festival with an interesting group of US surfers. (Skip Frye, Tom Curren and others were there to help organize a unique contest format). Good read for anyone who can find a copy at their specialty magazine seller. hey tom, i think you’re getting screwed. i got my new SJ 3-4 days ago. they must have blacklisted you because everyone i know already got theirs too. anyhoooo… the surfer’s path is a good mag too, i know they have them at the GreenRoom in newport beach, so if anyone is around orange county they could pick one up and check it out there. -steve

Next, howcum you get your SJ way befor I do? You got > connections? Actually, I’d let my subscription lapse - this was my last issue. Took care of that after reading this article. As for delivery delays, well, does your mail carrier surf? This has been known to happen  A friend > passed me a very interesting magazine, “The Surfer’s Path” from > the UK. I’ve also seen this magazine at both Barnes & Noble and Borders, at least in Ventura County. First class magazine. And thanks for your kind words on my own endeavour… Nels

Next, howcum you get your SJ way befor I do? Hey Tom, nice site and boards! Diggin’ those superchaged fishes! I’m from Texas also and, from what I’ve noticed, surf mags tend to take alot longer to get here. Or maybe that’s because I’m temporarily landlocked in Austin. Sucks. Subscriptions tend to be a little more timely, though.

Or maybe that’s because I’m temporarily landlocked in Austin. … Did you guys see Hynd’s house at J-Bay!!! What a freakin’ piece of art…and talk about LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION!!! Anyway…Hey J.D… I’ll be moving to Austin (from L.A.) in May/June. Not really looking forward to driving 5 hrs for surf. Any advice on driving routes to Aransas, Corpus or SPI? Tom, any word from Bryson yet? Thanks… Later…deeb…

Deeb: I’ve got his number finally. Haven’t made contact yet. Will e-mail you by the weekend. Just got my copy… but I’m in NY. Hynd interview is interesting. EJ>>> Next, howcum you get your SJ way befor I do? You got>>> Actually, I’d let my subscription lapse - this was my last issue. Where the frick did DH get the dough to build those houses???

Are you ready for this? Times are ballpark depending on traffic and one way from Austin: It’s about a 2 1/2 to 3hr. drive to Corpus, 3 1/2 to Port Aransas, 6hrs. down to SPI, maybe 2 1/2 to 3hrs. to Galveston, 3 1/2 to Freeport and about 3-4 to Matagorda. e-mail me at Take it easy.

I’d bet the ASP/ISP (whatever it is now) paid him pretty good, as well as Surfer Mag for his writing (used to love his top 44 reviews, just brutal, self serving - but so entertaining). The man seems to be not one to sit still. Despite his counter-culture stance, I’d bet he’s more of a driven go-getter type ‘A’ type than a lot of big businessmen are. Never out of the spotlight, surfing wise, for too long. Anyone know about J-bay property values? That house looks like one of the real high-end summer rental type houses you see in some beach communities. I’m always in the little rental across/down the street with a monstrosity like that blocking my view of the water. Usually end up standing next to the big-houses garbage cans to check the waves. More power to Mr. Hynd for his success.>>> Where the frick did DH get the dough to build those > houses???

My theory is the bigger the beach house, the more the owner works to pay for it. A longer walk or a short drive can buy the wise surfer time time time…

Ever notice how those monster beach houses usually seem unoccupied? My > theory is the bigger the beach house, the more the owner works to pay for > it. A longer walk or a short drive can buy the wise surfer time time > time… Yep. And - the folks that rent/stay in them seem to stay inside so much more than on the beach. Go rent a beach house for a fortune and sit in front of the TV all day… does not compute. Once I split a big new house with 6 friends to defer costs… always felt afraid to get sand or wax on anything. It was not normal. Regular rentals - a few since the big house on ‘Joisey’ Shore - with a few friends, or my family have been much more relaxing. Board repair on the porch or kitchen table. Lobster on the ‘special’ night in the big dented pot, and offshores on small NJ peelers just over the dunes = good summer vacation. Eric J

A buddy of mine was in J Bay a few years ago (claims it was best surf trip he’s ever taken) According to him D.H. rides many different boards (not locked into the tri) and rips on every one of 'em. Thanks D.H. for that “counter culture”. He is a breath of fresh air compared to the corporate poster boy mentality…

Check the “Litmus” video. It has a whole segment featuring D.H. riding a number of different boards - from a tiny Frye fish to a long Brewer pin at J.B.

Where the frick did DH get the dough to build those > houses??? Hynd, a unique and interesting intellect, has a degree in economics. From his brief exposition on the topic it sounds like he knows how to use it.
