I recently got a 7.5 amp Skil 100. It is in excellent condition. Today I decided to clean it real good and remove the clicker. When I turned the planer on its side I heard something rattle. I shook and shook the planer for about 10 minutes and sure enough there was a foreign object inside the motor housing. I disassembled the planer and extracted the set screw pictured below. Problem is I have no idea where it came from. I consulted a parts diagram found here http://q-lon.net/PDF/S100.pdf and the only screw that seems to fit the bill is part #3 on the diagram. Only problem is the two screws shown in the diagram are in their proper place. The only thing I have not taken apart is the armeture and the fields. I put it all back together and it purrs like a kitten. I'm just worried cause I don't know where the screw came from. Any ideas????? For all I know it could have been floating around loose in the case and the case got upset and it ended up in there????
By the way the screw threads perfectly in a tiny hole in the base that seems to go nowhere......I assume that hole is used for a blade alignment jig or something.
Is the screw small enought to fit through the slots on the motor cover plate??? (This is the sheet metal plate that protects the fan blades) If it will fit through the slots it may have just fallen in as you suspect. Just a thought
Not that one. That screw is in tact. See the small third hole between the drum and motor mount screws......it will thread into that hole. On mine that hole has no screw in it.
PS. it was too big to fit thru the vent holes in the sheet metal cover plate but the vents on the fan size are big enough. My gut is telling me that it had to come off of the armeture somewhere or its foreign to the motor itself. Just not sure.
Ive got about five Skils in various states of disassembly and have looked for that type of grub screw on all the parts. It definitely isnt part of the armature. The only other grub screws are the two that hold the brush housings in place. Those are way smaller gauge than the one you have pictured. Its likely a foreign object that got in there somehow.
The two that hold the brush housings in are in their place. I'm curious what the purpose is of the third hole in the base that I mentioned above.....the small one near the motor mount screws. This mystery screw threads perfectly into that hole. Part of what worries me is that his screw seems of the same vintage and design as what Skil would have used somewhere in this planer.
This type of screw is often used to pin a collar onto a shaft. That's what has me thinking it could be part of the armeture.
Most likely the third hole you refer to is for holding one of the accessories. I have seen pictures of some Skil 100's that come with blade adjustment pieces, etc. Contact Pete C on this forum, he will probably know for sure.
