Are Skil 100 prices dropping due to a recession, because shapers can shape with any planer, or because the Virutex planer shapes just as well… I have been shaping for years!!! Never used a Skil, but I want to try one…but not even at $500 for a used planer… Anyone know of another planer, the Hitachi can’t be the next best thing to a Skil 100…
the virtuex planer? heck - do you have a link for this type of planer? would love to ck it out… as for the skill 100’s- think about it- theose tools are ANTIQUES THAT STILL FUNCTION. i doubt the price would ever drop unless the world stopped using electricity…
Dave, The way I have my Hitachis set-up,with the motors re-wired,carbide blades, vac hook-up,and the biggest thing to make it over the top,and kills the Skill,is M-16A2E aftermarket pistol grips(for AK-47s) for the depth control knob…A Skill in all aspects of shaping pales severally in comparison,SEVERALLY!The composite rifle grips really have made it a big, big, difference, and I live close to the maker of the grips.A little tuning, and bang, for a Hitachi planer, not a gun. …I’m making some extras and plan on giving one to Jim Phillips to try, they are the S**T MY FRIEND! …The only thing I’m missing is a grit barrel for one? J.P. OR ANYONE does Stan P. make them for Hitachis ?.. Or I’ll just make my own!Herb
Pistol grips for the depth knob? I’m interested… Herb, if you make an extra set and want to have another beta-tester let me know. PS I have a Skil 100 in my garage, but I prefer the Hitachi.
I have a grit barrel from Shaper’s Australia… How can I get you to modify my Hitachi?..pistol grip and lever locker…bang!!! Let me know
Grit barrel?? is that the same as the drum sander addapter. I just got one from fiberglass Hawaii in S.B. I havn’t had a chance to use it yet, other than on some scrap foam. It looks to be a good tool. Kind of pricy though. http://dreamflagproductions.com
Herb , The AK-47 pistola grip sounds interesting. I know your busy, but a picture of this bit of American ingenuity here at SSDF would be bitchin. Share it here dude. Chris
…Give me sometime to finish what I got going. The nice thing about the new M-16 GRIP is to in stall it, you just remove the old ball knob, and stick the new grip on.The original pin is used so you still have that reference point. The ball at the end of the pin sits up against the body of the grip, down at the bottom lip of the grip and travels thru the center to the back side of the grip body to give it some real hold.I also rubberize them for feel and grip(sweaty hands),and put a special soft washer under the grip to take up the slop in the control, making the rotation smooth, not restrictive, but positive,no need for a lock,it will stay put where you dial it in to…nice huh?The U.S.Govt.spent 5 millon dollars developing the M-16A2E grip, the dynamics of the design are unbeatable,(more than what I can say for the rest of the rifle).A FAL grip would be my next choice. What’s funny about these grips are in there original configurations there unusable for the planer(hollow body),but these after market grips have enough of a base on them to make it work. NO MORE FUNKY LITTLE KNOBS FOR ME!!!Herb
…Okay,I’ll take some pics of the modification right now, hopefully,I’ll have them up on the site tommorrow, if all goes well.Herb
how much for your skill 100 planer ?
…Okay guys I submitted some pics earlier this morning.(Hope they show off enough to see the work),Now it’s up to “S” to approve them, stay tune! Herb
