Skil 100 tuneup

Hi Robin, I picked up some ANK HSS blades from Dave today, and they are quite different from the carbide ones they make. These appear to be heat-treated and ground both sides. I suspect they make the carbides out of really crappy steel because they’re never sharpened and the steel part doesn’t do anything except hold the carbide strip. Carbide can be fused better to cheap, low-carbon steel. The ANK HSS blades are about $50, and you can buy directly from them. For your type 5 blades, the Bosch ones will fit but you have to grind 1/4" off the end. I think you can still get them from Skil (Bosch) though. Let me know if you can’t find them and I’ll check with Bosch here.

they’re actually $34.95.

I thought I would bring this thread back to life.  I just sourced another skil 100 planer.  It has a manual with it dating 1/64, but the cool this that separates this planer from others is the sharpening jig that was in the box.  It is a 10900 skil 100 plane blade sharpening kit dating from 3/62.  Not sure how common these are.

The crazy thing about this jig is that you are supposed to use your planer as the grinding wheel.  Remove the belt over and attach the wheel.  Run the jig over the back base in order to set the 45 degree cut.  Crazy or the best thing since sliced bread… you decide. I will post pictures tomorrow.

Can’t see enough Skil’s.

Twins are both going well.

Finally finished my Type-5.

Shaped a 9’4" longboard last week with it.

Smooth.

While I was waiting for the front shoe, I replaced all the screws with allen head bolts.

Gonna leave the base long for now.

Did modify the lever for some 1/4" cuts.

I’ll have my Pre-Type 1 down at the Board Show in Del Mar this weekend.  $700 or best offer.  Restored and repaired by Pete C.  Lowel

Hey Barry!

Type 5 if you recall long or short thread.

Cut my sweeties tail off.

But not 2 much.

The best thing I have found is the blades! (Thanks Scotty)

Orange and red moving (barefoot) with regular speed no rip!

Using trend PB/28 solid carbide stc/hw blades, perfect fit.

Now back to the regularly scheduled planer porn broadcast.

So here is the sharpening jig pics.

The nice thing about steel blades is that they can be sharpened.  If you don’t nick them they can be sharpened multiple times.  Used to be a mobile sharpener at the Maui Swap Meet.  Once you knew the angle any good sharpener could do it.

Bravo!

Lovin’ this…

In a sense

self sustained planer blades!

Lowel, what day you gunna be there?

I’ll be there Sat.

I’ll look for ya.
