I know that this is a mainly surfboard design forum but I would really be thankful for any advice. I am glassing a skimboard and am having trouble getting a sharp (90 degree) edge on the bottom of the rail. I think my problem is in my procedure and maybe masking in a certain way during the hotcoat would help me solve my problem. Any help or suggestions would be a huge help. Thanks.
Hi Kron, Dont worry, guys over here are nice and helpful. I build skimboard too. Glass in free lap, not need a tape-off masking. Glass in cut lap, you need to tape-off. Sounds like u re glassing a plywood skimboard, am I rite? Regards, Crabie
I am actually building a hi density foam skimboard. Im sorry Crabie, I dont quite understand what you are trying to explain, maybe you could be more specific.>>> Hi Kron,>>> Dont worry, guys over here are nice and helpful. Hi Ekon, No difference between glassing a skimboard and a surfboard. Free lap and cut lap are those boardbuilding jargon. I m sorry I m not good in English, but its worth to search the achieve, there are lots of good questions and answers there. BTW, why not sand off the sharp edge into a round edge if you use high density foam? —> Just curious… Regards, Crabie>>> I am actually building a hi density foam skimboard. The reason I have been rounding the bottom edge of the foam is because I was under the impression that the glass would not wrap around a sharp edge. I am still new at board building, I am only on my second board. I will look up “free lap” and “cut lap”. Your english is fine, thanks for the help. Anyone else have any advice, it is allways welcome.>>> Hi Ekon, No difference between glassing a skimboard and a surfboard. Free > lap and cut lap are those boardbuilding jargon. Hi ekon, Where do u live? Crabie
This is exactly what I do for a cut lap, thanks loco moco. Regards, Crabie
I am from the Northeastern United States. Right now me and a couple of my friends are living in Rhode Island, enjoying the skimboarding and surfing. Where are you from?>>> Hi ekon,>>> Where do u live?>>> Crabie
Its too far away, I m from Hong Kong. People here make plywood skimboard for sand riding, not much people ride skimboard, may be 10-15 people . I just have made few out of eps foam. Ekon, what type of blank are you using to make your skimboards?
Ed, I am using a 3/4" sheet of Divinicell PVC foam H-80. It is a high density structural foam with a density of about 5 lb/ft3. I am able to thermomold the rocker right into the sheet. Stuff works great but is fairly hard to get a hold of in my area. Anyone with any leads PLEASE let me know. thanks.
