hi guys Im starting to shape foam skimboards out of d-cell with poly resin. i was wondering if anyone had experience with it and could let me know a few tricks of the trade when working with the stuff. also, if anyone has opinions about any other materials for skimboards that work equal or better any information would be appreciated. Thx in advance.
right on. when you say backfill or seal the foam before lamination do you do it with the resin or some kind of spackle filler??
The divinycell is a great way to go for what you’re trying to do. You could also try this poly sheet foam too just to experiment:

No real tricks, just follow the standard shaping advice. Have a good, even template, don’t leave hard edges and take your time and don’t rush…no matter how excited you are to get it glassed and ride it. Oh yeah, you might want to back fill/seal the foam before you laminate depending on how clean your finish comes out. Use this while shaping, it will make your life much easier and give you that clean finish you’re looking for:
Good luck, post pics.
Dcell is what Zap skimboards (one of the largest builders) uses. I believe they use a fiberglass mat though on their standard boards not the standard 4oz weave cloth used for surfboards. Don’t think they do hand lay ups with the mat cloth, they use molds. They also use the carbon cloth for the pro models which are hand layed.
