Skimboard tips

The stringer turned out great, here’s a pic. What should I use to laminate the pieces of foam together? It needs to be sandable. I have some spray adhesive I have used for foam in the past (didn’t melt it) would that work? Or does it need to be a more positive bond (gorrila glue etc.). I need something that isn’t going to get in the way when sanding right?

Thanks,

Nathan

The foam and stringer are glueing up overnight, shaping starts tomorrow afternoon. Hopefully all goes well!

Okay, should the rocker go straight across the bottom, or in a slight curve (Rockered more rearward at the edges of the board, and nearer the front in the middle)?

should have more continious than you have now with a smaller flat spot in the middle…

Hey Deathfrog, could you send me your program? The link on the other site is broken. Do I have to completely redo it? Or could I thin it out in the nose a little?

Okay, I have enough foam (It’s extra wide, I could just cut it off and sand it back flat, or use a hotwire) and enough wood to make another stringer, if you could help me (if it is at all possible to get the program I would be greatly indebted to you) with the profile etc. I’m going by your guide, so I guess you’re the man I need to listen to lol.

I don’t have it anymore

and thinning the nose will work

Would it be better to make up a new stringer? I’m using a piece of 1/4 ply to create the template for the stringer, I have it weighted with 1 1/2 inches of rocker in the nose and 1/2 in the back, I could trace that outline onto the wood, it would be much smoother. I don’t really want to try and sand down that oak stringer with the foam already glued to it, I would decimate the foam in the process. Also, the foam didn’t glue up quite right, so It will be a good chance to redo that.

Does this one look okay or is it too thin in the nose? I ran out of wood lol. I was thinking of glueing on another strip to the top of the nose and then sanding it to blend in with the rest.

Okay, if it looks a little funny it’s because it is 1" thick in the middle (Maybe a little less from using the sureform on it, love that tool!). I could thin it out to 3/4, but that would require alot more shaping on the top of the board as my foam is 1" thick. What do you guys think? What about riding? Will there be a noticeable difference between 1" thick and 3/4" thick riding wise?

I decided to make it the tried and true 3/4, it’s actually a little bigger than 3/4 but I’m happy with it. It was a little bigger than the 1 inch foam I had, so instead of trying to get it to match I just made it a little smaller than the foam. That way I can sand out handling imperfections anyway. It’s looking really good now. I’m liking the shape of the rocker, I have the board shape made, and everythings coming together. The nose is a little thin, I may put some extra glass or thin ply in there on the top to reinforce it a bit, maybe from the tip to about 2" back from the tip, but I’ll see how it goes.

I’ve learned so much on this project! I got the new stringer glued up today (Used Epoxy, it sets up alot faster and can be worked with more easily when trying to do more than one step in one day). I learned that sandpaper stapled to a long flat board is an excellent tool for getting edges flat, and that epoxy when mixed in large quantities (Before I would mix maybe 1 tsp. for my airplanes, I did almost a cup this time), it cures alot faster! It was tacky probably 1 min after I got the foam on (good thing I got it on quick!), and it gets HOT! I got some on my fingers (Forgot gloves, again) and it was very warm. I mixed it in a disposable foam cup, and the epoxy and foam in the bottom of the cup melted together, leaving this hard, yellowy blob at the bottom of the cup. Of course, it will be cooler when on the board because it is spread thinner, but wow. I should have thought that regular epoxy glue works the same way as resin lol)

Well, thanks to the epoxy, my board is now about 90% shaped. It was much easier and more fun than I expected! I loved every minute of it. I had some problems with the nose, I had glued on some extra foam to the nose when making up the foam blank because I didn’t have enough thickness to make the nose on the first board, and this one was just barely below it, so I thought I would just cut through it, as things were going so fast. (I heart my sureform). I must have gotten a bad batch of poly-u glue (It was "Nail Power off brand I got a lowes, I’m sticking with Ultimate glue from now on), I have never known that stuff to not stick to something, but it did not stick to the foam, I was peeling the top piece of foam off with the sureform/sand paper, so I just started picking at it and it came off without even disturbing the bead of the foam underneath for the most part. But, there were some spots, and now the foam was a little thin in the nose, so I mixed up some epoxy and foam dust into a paste and smeared it all in there, but it wasn’t enough so after that dried I did the same with some titebond II wood glue, and it’s drying overnight (That’s what I need to clean up tomorrow) After that I have to fill a couple of spots underneath where the foam got dinged (Any help here is greatly appreciate, techniques, etc., they are much smaller). Anyway, everything went very well. Here are some pics (The wood glue mix isn’t in the pics, and the camera made the epoxy mix look really ugly for some reason. I’m painting it anyway so no worries.)
