K. Slater’s Haleiwa Hawaiian Pro board had a very visible large red X under the Quiksilver logo. Is the King switching systems? Is Quik buying Red X? Tom? Rob Olliges
Hey Rob, you live in Hawaii, man. Go surfing!
Rob, Where and when did you see this? Kelly rode Red X for a while a couple years ago and was in the process of switching sponsors. Unfortunately, due to a few misteps that were taken during the process, FCS was able to legally prevent Kelly from switching via threat of a lawsuit against us. Check the March 01’ cover of Surfer. More than likely what you saw recently was his “K” logo. Tom
TOM Im going to try to post the picture it it doesnt work try this http://www.paradoxdistribution.com/slaterx.jpg Its just quik not yours ive seen the shirt and the X to the trained eye hahaha is way different. http://www.surfboardglassing.com
Rob, I hadn’t found the pic, when I posted that it might have been his K logo. We have no idea what inspired Quiksilver to produce that logo. And, it’s shear coincedence that Kelly appears to be the first team rider sporting it. I’m sure the guys at FCS are not real stoked on the logo association.
That board had FCS fins. A board used in another heat had black between the X to make a black square with a red X. Or perhaps the nearest FCS sponsor grabbed a magic marker. Posca? Zig? Is Slater pulling a Curren; at Haleiwa; on a title win comeback? Or is Quik co-opting another brand? Trademark infringement? Rob Olliges
I have seen pics of Kelly and the other Quick riders and they cut up those big red stickers to lots of different shapes. An X is pretty standard shape. I say its coincedence…but I might be wrong
—Quik also has a line that has to do with X as well guys.— Sure, everyone wants an X. That was THE marketing buzz in 2001 and the companies still think there are customers you are not yet immune to it. However, an X that is red and with geometric simularities to an established product brand in the same industry is pushing the envelope of infringement. No doubt RedX has contacted Quik and “cease and desist” letters have been drafted. Let’s not kid ourselved, the industry supported by our art is made up of businesses who are in business to succed. The main loser here, of course, is FCS. And RedX may see it’s brand erode if this continues. Rob Olliges
…That Chris Chaput/ Abec 11 skateboard wheel owner started a new skateboard deck company called BIG RED-X.At first I was offened then I sat back and laughed, and thought to myself ,you can’t keep a good name down.Herb
