SLO it is!

Well, I was debating between Cal-Poly San Luis Obispo and another college, and after visiting both I chose Cal-Poly. I found the program to be much more impressive. Now, have any of you surfed around there? I used to boogie board at Cayucus and Pismo (Pismo is great, if a little small, but when your’re 4’ tall (haven’t been there for a while) everything seems big). I remember Pismo because it’s very gradual, great for skimming. Anyway, what are the best beaches around there to surf at? Also, if I’m going to live there, I’m going to surf, so how do I get into real surfing (As of now I just enjoy the building of boards in general)? I don’t have much interest in longboards, I’m more of a carver. what kind of board should I start out on? I’m between 6’1" and 6’2", basically 150 lbs wet (Pun intended). Also, I’d like to build my first board, if that’s a bad idea someone let me know.

Yes, it’s a bad idea.

That’s why we are all here.

A bad idea meaning it get’s you stuck building boards for life, or because the board will automatically suck? I feel I’ve learned much from my skimboard project.

First answer is correct.

Now don’t come saying nobody warned you…

Um, hate to break it to you but I’m already hooked, also, I think I’m going to use these techniques to build myself an RC airplane, of course there, once you get your plane all glassed, you can pour some solvent on the foam to get rid of it, then you have a strong shell (Just don’t crash lol.

no point in removing the foam

weight reduction would be negligble

but strength would be reduced dramatically

Well, you brace the inside with wooden stringers and formers. It’s actually partly to make space for electronics. Also, in RC airplanes, any weight reduction is critical.

i think wooden stringers would be way heavier than 1 pound density eps

compare a hws to a compsand

I mean like, really thin, 1/16 inch etc. Anyway, I’ve just seen pics of the airframes. So what’s my best board choice?

your tall and skinny like me

we have high centre of gravity and low weight

not a good combo for shortboarding

ive been riding 6 5 to 6 6 ers for years

but prefer 6 2 as my main board these days

turns easier !

but wider 19 3/4 and more volume 2 3/4 in the rails as a good allrounder from 1 to 5 ft

and when it pumping and not crowded so paddlings not an issue

im riding 19 1/2 2 1/16

i would recomend a 2 pd eps stringerless

Hey Nathan, great choice, I just graduated from Cal Poly and I loved the area. My favorite places to surf were Sand Spit, which is in Los Osos, its a really fast and hollow wave when its good. I also really liked the Rock in Morro Bay, and Studios in Cayucos. Enjoy your college experience, surf as much as possible, and have a great time in SLO, its an awesome town.

What style of board though? Single fin, thruster, etc. Fish? I don’t know what the characteristics of each type are.

Nathan, what about going to class and studying!???!?!?!? haha

I went to school in a “college town” versus a city. I think you will love the experience. That you are near the ocean in an area rich with surf spots is a huge bonus. See if Kevin with PoorBoy is still in the area - he will hook you up with everything you need.

Yeah, I love the college towns, that’s all I’ve been to. And growing up in a rather small community (65,000 isn’t small per say, but in comparison to LA or SF), the transition to college will be easier that way. I just really liked the school.

You should know that the water can be cold. Colder than Santa Cruz or even Vancouver Island for that matter. Current temperatures are below 60 and below 50 isn’t unusual in winter. A GOOD wetsuit will be as important as your choice of board.

Wave conditions vary. Anything from nearly flat dribblers to 40 foot bombs might be found at local beaches depending on the season.

If you aren’t sure what type of board you need, stick with something basic like a mid range thruster or hybrid. Build out a well rounded quiver from there. Anything from a single fin longboard to a solid big wave gun might be put to use on any given day so you’d better get busy.

PM me if you want more specifics.

THE CANYON! Don’t bring any friends or cameras. Don’t look at anyone in the eye. Act like you are lost and tryng to get somewhere else. Then get barreled out of your mind. It’s been a couple of years…but don’t laff at anyone wearing a Black Gath.

Have fun, but show respect. Most of the guys in Pismo, Cayucos and in Morro at the “Rock” are all transplants from somewhere else(mostly Orange Co.). The guys that grew up there(even the most prominent shaper) have all moved on. Pismo(aka"Little San Clemente") has come and gone. The waves are still there, but the lifestyle that once went with it is all but dead(put a nail in it). The other SD poster that just couldn’t keep his mouth shut about the “Canyon” is sentenced to 30 days in the hole with “Whitey”. HD McDing
