I am getting ready to glass my bonzer fish this weekend and want to do a smoke resin swirl on the deck. I figured I would use clear resin and then drop in a little translucent grey in there and then dump it on the deck but I don’t know what pigment to use to get a transluscent grey or where to get it because I think all the pigments at Fiberglass hawaii are Opaque (sp?).
Final dementions are 5’6"x 21 1/8 x 2 1/2 with an 18" nose and 17 inch tail. The thing used to be a round pin untill I dropped her as a baby. Hopefully it won’t become retarded!
Skeletor: pigment can be used to create a translucent color, or tint, but the effect is slightly different from using something sold as tint. I can’t explain it too clearly, but I use only pigments, a little or a lot, depending on whether I want a translucent (see the stringer) or opaque (don’t see the stringer) laminate.
To get your desired smoke tint effect, sounds like you want a board that’s mostly clear, with translucent color swirls. While there’s no hard and fast rule, I’d say a pot of clear with some teaspoon-sized dollops of color here and there will provide pretty much the effect you want. This effect is really “artistic” in application, in that you don’t control it with much accuracy.
DON’T stir the colors into the clear in the pot. At most move a stick through the pot only one revolution, or the colors will mix too much.
Austin’s board looks hot in two ways: nice effect, and in the sun it’ll be up to 800 degrees in no time. I try keep my customers away from dark-colored and darkly tinted boards. Besides, the lighter tints are easier to laminate or spray.
I too push my customers away from dark colors and will not build black ones for people. This was my personal board last year. For a dark colored board like this I always use a reflective bag until im about 5 steps from the water. While sanding this hot coat i was in the sun for like 5 minutes and when i picked it up i actually burnt my forearm. The nice thing about this board was that during winter it was still warm.
Thanks Austin and Honolulu for clerifying how to get the translucent deck. I am going to glass on monday (to keep down the amount of neighbors around while i glass). I will post pics when I am done and hopefully i can get some feedback on any problems or color failures as this is my first non solid tint. The bottom is going to be marble blue and yellow which will be completely opaque and the deck will hopefully come out looking smokey.
Austin your tints are amazing man, my glass jobs are pretty good but your stuff just looks so clean.
