I thought smoking was banned at Waikiki Beach? Everywhere you walk, there’s someone puffing away, exhaling right into you. Anywhere on Waikiki beach there’s one every 20 or so people. Trades spread the fumes everywhere. Cigars too. For hotels, the Sheraton Waikiki is one of the worst. All entrances including the front one has smokers everywhere and the smoke travels all around the lobby. It stinks. You can’t walk anywhere without smelling and inhaling 2nd hand smoke. Room balconies are bad, the smoke travels all around adjoining rooms. Is there any hope of banishing these pathetic adicted people to their own little smoking area? Maybe herd them to Molokai’i…
630pm jump in my car ready to dip after work
pull up at the stoplight and second hand smoke invades the dream
I look around to see the shaman ,addict, psychicly affected, or other solid justified tobacco user…and no…one…
then I say to the gods of heaven and earth
" there must be anotheer source of this smoke"
looking down out my window I see a burning butt on the ground waifting ceremonial curls skyward.
who the pok is wasting precious tobacco on a non ceremony
is this a psycotic tobacco addict leaving yet another snail trail
revealing their physical passing with no concern for anyone else but themselves and the children of tobacco planters in need of college tuition?
I drive away and am free
putting on my fins ,modified udts.rolling onto my back
the smell comes back not a live charge but some dead butts
yep the trail on deliteerus continues as I look the buts are in fact strewn about to entertain my angst…
pok butts
…ambrose…
my father a career smoker…put his buts in the empty pack so as not to litter

pok butt heads
Faces of the world congregate at Waikiki.
They wear funny outfits and hats.
More importantly, they come to have a menthol cigarette and simultaneously, inhale a piece of our paradise.
I think we should designate Kalakaua non-smoking.
Kuhio should be smoking. Wait, that won’t work.
Show 'em aloha. Their dollars trickle down to become ours.
At least we don’t have smoking and gambling.
Even Catamaran crews smoke. And some in front of the Outrigger Waikiki Beach are too drunk to smoke.
send’em to the Shorebird to cook their own steak, and you got a party going on! Wiskey Tango, we call it here in San Diego
no they never did ban smoking at any of the beaches here in hawaii as far as I know, but they did in restraunts
Man, that’s a problem everywhere. We just banned it here due to the beach pollution problem. Nothing like laying in the sand w/ the butts.
Ambose - another great post, ceremonial curls skyward
Howzit E-pacman, What gets me is people worried about the butts but not the pollution thats been sucked up by the sand. When ever I see a person toss a butt I give them hell and tell them to put it in the trash can. I must say I'd rather see a ciggie butt on the beach instead of a brown turd.Aloha,Kokua
turds and butts, any color, no good
My take is- go surf ‘out’ of Waikiki. Head to 3’s, Pops, Paradise, Bowls, whatever. Or maybe Ala Moana Beach Park. Canoes is canoes. Queens is Queens. Smoking isn’t going away anytime soon. Just like they’re never going to make people (especially stupid tourists) wear helmets when they drive those mopeds around. Waikiki isn’t our spot anymore. It’s theirs.
I treated patients in the the Queen’s ER, and I kept seeing all these poor folks who crashed on scooters not wearing helmets. Broken bones and broken teeth. Jesus. Make a damn law. Our state has no rules on helmets. Come on, any idiot 18 years or older can rent one of these and superman over the front.
As with smoking: California did it, we should too. No smoking indoors.
What the hell, it’s futile. I give up.
Maybe Linda Lingle will log into Swaylocks.
no smoke …can
tell sombody no smoke…no can
hold your breath …can
tell sombody where no can smoke…so what?
they listen…what?
when you enter an when you leave
you walk thru the wall of smokey insecurities and poorly tended spells
god bless the weakened
may they become strong enough
to refrain from smoking.
…ambrose…
dogs being taken…
never for a walk…
just for a krap an a spill
on the beach where 2 year olds eat the sand
and where the butts are sunburned all the day
smoking is banned even in the pubs in NZ
I see alot of Japanese smoking and littering. They have filthy beaches and come here and litter away. There are also many local offenders too. Try going to Ala Moana Shopping Center and not coming home smelling of smoke. I’d support a law making tobacco illegal.
For the record: The beaches in Japan are no more dirty/littered than the beaches I’ve visited elsewhere. And other than a few obvious tourist spots, are less populated. The Japanese do smoke in greater number but that’s declining and also campaigns for proper smoking ettiquette are making inroads.
Anyway…Some people have actual medical reasons for not wanting to be around smoke. But to most people it is but an aesthetic issue: they don’t like the smell and they don’t like the look of cigarette butts and this dislike is a fairly modern trend.
But if one thinks deeper he’ll realize that the cigarette butts are a million times closer to nature than all the cement and steel with which Waikiki and the rest of our coastlines have been covered. Which is more an affront to the soul and our health both mental and physical: The cigarette butt or the cement on to which it has been tossed?
Yes, let’s get the butts into the cans. But let’s also send the pavement back to the quarry.

I lived in Japan for 5 years in Toyohashi. Right next to the atsumi coastline. Companies and private citizens often dump large trash on the beach to avoid hefty recycling costs. I’ve seen TVs, refrigerators, washing machines, cars and other garbage along the coast. After storms alot more garbage comes to the beach from streams. Sorry but Japan has the filthiest beaches I’ve ever seen.
There are exeptions though. One being Niijima.
Prohibition doesn’t work. Too many rules already. Lead by example. Try to educate. Cig. butts are gross. Tobacco is good. Tobacco habit is very bad. Mike
I lived in Japan for 5 years in Toyohashi...
And I spent six in Kanagawa, surfing everywhere from Chiba to Izu, and all I can say is that your experience doesn’t match mine. I found no such dumping of stuff and though it’s certainly no natural paradise, I don’t remember being too disappointed in the state of the beaches. I was disappointed at the small good-wave season though!
…a friend of mine lives in Japan, and told me that Okinawa and the other small islands “sports” clean beaches…
Here’s a pic of a typical Waikiki trash can with ashtray on the top. They’re EVERYWHERE.
The World Health Organization estimates that there are about 1.25 billion smokers in the world, representing about one third of the global population aged 15 and over. The vast majority of these smokers live in the developing countries (800 million) and most are men (700 million). In China alone, there are about 300 million smokers (90% men and 10% women), about the same as in all industrialised countries combined. About one third of smokers in the developed world are women, compared to about one in eight in developing countries.
The above is from the following site. The trend to smoke is increasing, not decreasing.
