Sneak peek at a Mike Hynson XTR BLACK NIGHT

Went down to Epoxy Pro on Friday and gave some assistance to some installs on a couple of Mike HYNSON XTR BLACK NIGHTS and JOHN BELIK QUADS for Sean Mattison. Thought you guys would like to get a sneak peek. Will have some pics of the finished boards soon. Mahalo,Larry

With this install I wanted to show you that the ProBox jigs can be cut to route all 4 ProBoxes at the same time. Mahalo, Larry

In this picture you will see that I penciled in the ProBoxes and taped off the area around the penciled ProBox outline with 1 1/2" good masking tape.

Some photos of the whole board would be really nice. Also would you mind sharing what cants and toe ins you used?

Here the jigs are glued to the tape and set for router. I do this with epoxy boards and glossed surface boards to secure a good firm set of the ProBox jigs to the board surface without sanding.

PLEASE NOTE: You should SAND area first then set ProBox jigs in newly built boards, but in special cases like a epoxy finish shown here by Epoxy Pro which is like a gloss and a retro fit on a glossed board sanding the surface first can effect the finished result of the board. Also in using the tape like this be well aware that the tape needs to be single layered and not have tape on top of tape because this will effect your ProBox inserts from fitting properly.

Hi deanbo, I will have some photos of the whole board completed soon. I can tell you cant placement for these boards. Front Proboxes 8 degree cants and back 0 degree cants to start. Mahalo,Larry

Larry,

That’s fantastic how you can get more boxes in such a limited space. I guess i wasn’t thinking? Shave the jigs!! You got me thinking about 6 fins plus a center box, then put the floater plug in the non used boxes for neutral floatation. right?

Side bar: I was out surfing yesterday, catching our current south swell…I’m finishing up with a quick hose off from the neighbors washdown. Some guys come running up the street looking for his FCS key he stashed in his car, he had a new quad fin, and was looking to flip flop his front fin to his back fins. He got it all set fixed up, but I noticed he had the entire cluster too far back. I didn’t bring it up cause it’s a new board and all, and the kids going through the stoke. But it’s a shame he will soon throw the board in the used quad fin rack the local surf shop.

Probox hides all my shaping sins. You and the Hawaii boys first rounds on me.

Thanks for being here.

Hi resinhead(Jay), You are very welcome and I especially enjoy sharing when people like yourself and other Swaylockians appreciate the tools and knowledge that Handshaper and Myself share with you to make your surfing experience a better one. Mahalo,Larry

Here’s one the Hynson BLACK NIGHTS routered and ready to install ProBoxes. After ProBoxes are installed and ready to sand, leave the tape on the board to help in sanding. The tape will act as a guide to let you know that you are hitting the surface of the board acting has a barrier.

Thanks Larry.

Thanks for the post Larry! Getting ready to install some this week. It’s nice to have a refresher. I like the tip on the tape.

It’s interesting that Mattison’s name is on the label with Hynson (now?).

Has he always done that on the Black Knights?

I’ve got a 9’6" HYII at the glassers right now…Sean sent some pics of Mike

signing the blank.

Definitely a nice touch.

Hi afoaf, Not sure how long Sean Mattison had his name on the BLACK NIGHTS, wish I could answer that for you. Thanks for sharing the pic of Mike in the garage, that’s a classic shot.

afoaf, Apparently Sean Mattison and Mike Hynson have had this relationship for a number of years. A Surfer/Shaper combination, the feeling of the surfboard surfed from a Surfer transfered to the craftsmanship of a Shaper which transforms the blank into a surfboard. Below is a pic sharing that experience in the shaping room. Hope that helps in answering your question about the names being shared on the board. Mahalo,Larry

darn those garage shapers anyway… I hear they are going to ruin surfing !!!

The shot of Mr Perfect Hair in the clean garage with pencil at the ready is pretty neat. Can’t imagine the board was shaped in there.

I had a Hynson about 10 years back that Mike did before Mattison raped his shapes. When he signed the blank he spelled my name wrong and designed wrong. Board was nice though.

I love it !

Keeepin’ it garage built.

Hynson is a Guru.At one time he was on the very top.I am glad to see him doing well.I saw him and Phil Edwards at the old Hobie Shop in Honolulu in the 1960’s.I was 15 years old and stoked as heck that they actually spoke to me.

deanbo, Here’s a full picture of the Mike Hynson XTR Black Night Quad 2 with ProBoxes. This board has 8 degree fronts and 4 degree rears for cant placements. I am going to show the Black Night Quad 1 on the ProBox on the move thread for some of the new Swaylockian members with some more detail close up pics. Mahalo, Larry
