Snowsurf / Bindingless Snowboard Builds

Anyone messing around with snow surfs?

An AkuShaper user just put together this edit on building snow surfs from home:

Kind of interesting seeing people use what’s basically surfboard design principles/build methods to build bindingless snowboards / snow surfs. Outlines, rocker, balance… same ideas, just pointed at snow instead of water.

Looks like this one’s laid up with pretty classic vacuum bagging methods, but I keep seeing a lot of folks going the wood build route too. I am not an expert on traditional snowboard construction but there doesn’t seem to be as many at-home builders, DIY guys doing it?

Curious:

  • Anyone here built one of these?

  • Foam vs wood?

  • Does surf rocker actually translate the way you’d expect on snow?

Feels like one of those crossover things that’s been happening quietly for a while. Just wondering who else has gone down that rabbit hole.

That video reminds me of the “Snurfer” (Sherman Poppen, 1965). It was the pre-cursor to the modern snowboard. Burton, a carpenter, modified the Snurfer concept. With his new creation, the snowboard was born.

Mountainboards were developed as off-season snowboard trainers. Several people did DIY builds. Those usually involve 1/16” maple veneers and “presses” (screw-down, hydraulic and vac-bag). While the process is a bit different for snowboards, the concept is similar.

Regarding rocker, pretty sure snowboards use “camber” (like mountainboards) for “pop.”
