And I think I’ve been planning too light of a glass schedule. It’s a 2lb blank from greenlight, the board is 5’4" x 20.75 x 2 3/8". Small wave, wide performace-y strange thing for the shape. Glassing with kiwck kick and CE, since I have a bit of both. I’m not going for super competition light weight, but I don’t want it to be a rock either. I was planning double 4oz S cloth deck and 6oz bottom, and some amount over the futures boxes (still unsure). But then I did some reading and saw people doing 6+6 on the bottom, 6+4 on the bottom, triple 4oz on the deck and everything inbetween. I saw that tips sheet from Greg Loehr too. I’m 120lbs and a small person, I barely have any dents in my 6+4 deck, 6 bottom us blanks red density board I made last year after a summer of riding it. Don’t care about flex, the board is so short I won’t notice it, I’ve never ridden a flexy board, I don’t know anything about engineering flex anyway.
So now I’m considering more glass. The blank feels extremely light in my hands anyway, and I want it to last. So how about 2x 4oz s with a 4oz e deck patch and the 6oz bottom? Is 6 oz bottom too easy to damage on a 2lb eps blank? I dont want it dented everytime I put it in my car or somebody puts their board on top of it. Would a 6+4 e cloth bottom and the 2x 4oz s with a 4oz e deck patch be very heavy, or normal weight?
And fin patches… In the futures video they say 3 football patches, but 3 of what weight? And I’ve heard of people doing anywhere from none to three. Obviously the advantages of using more are more strength, but whats the downside to using too much?
Too bad I don’t have a scale. If it will be around the weight of my current board, 5’7"x18.5"x2.75" with 6/4 deck and 6 bottom, red density PU from us blanks , glassed with the RR epoxy then I’ll be fine with it.
depends on how durable you want it. 4 oz bottom 4 x 2 top. works but will heal up a bit.
6 bottom, and a 6 x 4 top is bullet proof. especially with 2 lb. 2 lb EPS is pretty durable stuff.
I do 4 bottom, and 2 x 4 top with 2.5 lb eps. No problem, except for heal dents, but you want high performance, or no heal dents....you can't have both.
and by the way, you don't want it to last too long. Then you can't make another one?
If stringered blank, 6oz bottom 6+4oz top give a light but still durable board. 2x4oz top and bottom + 4oz at 45° deck patch is really effective, higher cost but and only one kind of fiber to buy and 4oz is easier to work for me.
For heavy foot double deck patch or better wood sandwich deck.
2x6 deck, 6 bottom over sealed 2lb EPS is a strong, durable board with comparable weight to standard pu/pe. That’s my typical EPS/Epoxy layup with basted rail laps and fin patches. Sanded hotcoat; no cheater/fill coat.
i looked up the density, red blanks is the 2nd lightest blank... I would do a triple 4oz on deck and double 4 oz on bottom if i want it to not ding too quickly
Of course you must lap the rails with at least 16oz to have them last, 20 would be reeal strong [if you don't sand-through]
also... seal blank with epoxy first, 75 grams total mix is enough per side
or...
2nd option for a lighter board... glass with 2*4+4ozpatched deck [2 patches, one underneath both feet]
and 6oz bottom, that would be the lighter option, still strong
you will get dents in the bottom from gripping the rails duckdiving if you use single layer 4 or 6 oz. Double 4oz bottom is super durable and not much more weight than single 6 oz. I usually do a triple 4oz deck and it still dents pretty heavily under the high traffic areas. but with 5 layers of cloth on the rails you have to try really hard to get a ding all the way to the core. that schedule on a 2# core will weigh less than your 6/6x4 on red blank. you can sand the lamination with heavy grit before you hotcoat for a better bond / easier finish sanding / and to drop some weight (grind away excess you dont need and need less resin on your hot coat)
Thanks all. Now I’ve read that s cloth is about 20% stronger, on here and other places. So how does 2 layers of 4oz s compare to two layers of 6oz e? I would imagine the 6 would be thicker (stronger) and absorb more resin (stronger? and heavier). It’s sealed with dap fast n final, and I was planning a sanded hot coat with no filler anyway. I might just go back and get more 6oz, so a 6 and 4 S cloth layer on top and 6 bottom. Cause I have like 4 yards of s cloth. I only have enough 6oz for 1 layer on the bottom right now, but I don’t live far from greenlight.
Double the deck with whatevah and single 6 oz. the bottom. A layer of 4oz. S cloth and 6oz. E deck is a super combo. Keep in mind that a production lay up from a glass shop would normally be 6 and 4 E or warp deck and a 6 E bottom. The 4oz. is usually not lapped but cut at the rail apex. You can go less or more from there based on the desired outcomes of strength vs. weight, My standard out of my shop would be a 6oz. E and 4 oz. Warp deck with a 6 oz. E bottom. Anyone considering a glassing schedule for an EPS board should tune in Greg Loehr’s Epoxy Glassing DVD. It’s enlightening. Lowel
Seal the blank. 6 oz bottom. 6 oz + 4oz top. no "patches". Call the guy who sold you the blank. He's really smart.....He will guide you.....
my story...well........somewhere in the construction industry there is a use for EPS foam...and there is an "industry standard" for EPS foam....might be goverment or a building trade group....somewhere there is a plus or minus 10 range....maybe someone from the industry can explain it for you.
......so maybe you bought 2 pound foam and it is at the lower side of the "range"...closer to 1.5 or 1.75........
Red foam / blue foam / green foam....that is a bad trick.....you need to know the denisity of the foam.....
Today in California you can buy real 2.5 EPS foam for surfboards.....Call Greenlight...find out what foam you have.
Well I made a dumb mistake. I was rolling out the glass to do the deck and it came up about foot short. Checked my math, a 5’4" board would need 10’8" of glass on the top, I bought 3 yards or 9 feet… Hooray for math?
I put the 6oz layer on the bottom though, that was fine. I’m gonna grab some 6oz glass and do a 6+4S top, and leave the 6 bottom. I guess the extra s glass can go on one of my longboards (skateboards) or something.
