soft rail egg

is this possible…i mean will it work in small muchy waves like NE FL??? around 6’1"-15-20-15-2.5. let me know any insight possible. thanks

i wouldnt do that. i made a 5’10, 15.5n, 21m, 15t, 2.75 thick with soft rails and it didnt work at all… and i mean AT ALL. it was a waste of time/money…etc.>>> is this possible…i mean will it work in small muchy waves like NE FL??? > around 6’1"-15-20-15-2.5. let me know any insight possible. thanks

guess i better do some sanding before i glass it to make those back rails hard huh then??? thanks steve. anyone else have any input??

You can see the board in the board section (flower egg) this board had pinched rounded rails going hard in the tail. I worked in small waves but if the waves where bigger (steeper) it was a nightmare,( beach break waves it might work better on a nice point) the same with a nice tucked under, worked much better. The board in the pictures has no fin in that stage, I used a 7.5 TK flex fin on it from Rainbow. (single). Peter Rijk.

Eggy rails take away flat planing surface from the bottom. You can compensate by minimizing rocker, adding length, or width. With the dimensions you give, you’re going to have to flatten the rocker. The thruster fin setup also does not work as well with egg rails, so you’re talking about going single fin here too. That means your whole style of surfing will need to change to get the most out of the design.

I think you would be better served with a soft low rail, a bit harder in > the tail, with a slight vee between the fin(s). Much more versatile and > predictable. I made a 6’3" by 21 by 2 3/4 single egg with a modern bottom contour and it works great. Slight concave running under the front to the fin and v out the tail. It has standard rails soft front third and hard out the back. The tail is pretty thin and knifey 3/8 thick at the end. Good until about shoulder high after that it’s a gamble.

Egg rails cause drag. Sometimes you can use this to your advantage. On a point wave with some juice that soft rail in the front 1\3 of the board will help pull the board up into the pocket almost by itself if all the other curves are correct. One of the most critical factors with this type of rail is to not make it too thick, bottom radius about the size of between a quarter and a fifty cent piece maximum. Much thicker and you’ll have no bite at all and no speed either. Now put a good crisp tucked under edge on this rail and it really starts to come alive! Soft with little or no edge up front going to tucked going to a fairly conventional hard edge in the back 18 inches or so. Don’t be afraid of a little double concave V between the fins if the board is over 20 inches wide. Everybody is so afraid of V! They say it slows you down. A board you can’t get on a rail is what’s slow! aloha, tom
