i dont know if ive ever seen this much avtivity on our coast ever…jeez
Thank goodness they’re keeping all those fat, fuzzy, great white lures safe at the Children’s Pool. It was only a matter of time…
god forbid we inconvenience them…
for those who didn’t bother to click on the link, this is a fatality… 60 year old swimmer (in a group of swimmers) had his leg bitten off at the knee and died.
I saw a part of a harbor seal on the beach with a big bite mark in it last weekend.
there’s a larger seal population these days, and more squid close to shore sometimes as well …
Dang, OB. We were just talking about this the other night. A lot of strange stuff in the water these days. My wife’s colleague (a marine biologist) had seen a white in La Jolla a week ago.
I just can’t believe Tabletop.
Very sorry for his family and for him.

Was out at Pipes when it happened. Helicopters clearing the water. Radical! Poor guy!
I had no idea he was swimming with a group.
I often see the lone swimmer going pier to pier here and envy their
balls.
I get spooked 100 yards off the sand laying on top of a paddleboard
never mind swimming it.
So true that scary feeling of just what is below me! Reef passes are the worst!
Reef passes are the worst!
Not as bad as when the “reef” passes you. Ive been a couple miles out and seen some large “shadows” go by. Very scary!!!
So true!
There were reports of surfers finding and playing with a juvenile white just 2 weeks ago at cardiff on the inside close to the beach. That’s maybe a mile away as the crow flies from the site of the attack. Wonder if there’s any connection…

Can we speculate that the increase in the population of these animals might attract predators into an area?
Surfing on this coast first started after a major reduction in these animals populations because of the hunting that had occurred. Now Sea Lions, Seal, and Otters are definitely making a comeback in population. And maybe more large predators are here as well?
Come on boys, let fire up the Evinrude’s! Don’t go after the sharks, just take out the bait.
For those who don’t know the San Diego area: There has been an ongoing battle for the rights to use a beautiful cove in La Jolla called “Children’s Beach”. The beach, at one time was actually used as originally intended, as a protected, calm water area for families with children, and others who wanted to wade or swim.
Enter the Sea Lions. Over time they took over the beach, and they brought their stink with them. And I don’t mean body odor. The water is contaminated and people are not allowed. Animal rights kooks don’t want the seals disturbed.Heaven forbid that we should consider humans in the equation.
So now Great Whites are hunting for food where the buffet table is getting more and more full of their favorite food. No surprise that the danger to swimmers will increase.
There is plenty of deserted coastline for seals. In my opinion, if the presence of seals indirectly endangers humans, the seals should be firmly escorted somewhere else. When it comes down to surivival, my loyalties are with the human species.
Surfing and swimming are part of California. We should keep it as safe as possible. I’d kill a shark, or kick a seal off a beach without batting an eye.

i don’t know the ins and outs of what’s going on at “Children’s Beach” and i’m sure your frustrations are well founded.

but this is kind of a harsh conclusion to come to. if everybody had this opinion, and acted on it, the oceans would soon be so sick that nobody would
be able to go in or enjoy them. going in the ocean comes with it’s risks. the risks and the interaction with nature are part of what makes it what it is.
that’s part of the thrill and the lure… i’m sure we can all agree. otherwise we might as well all go play video games or raquetball.
my prayers go out to this swimmer’s friends and family. losing a loved one is always difficult. maybe some comfort can come from knowing that
he was doing what he loved when it happened.
it sure does seem that something is going on down there for all this out of the ordinary marine activity that you all have been having lately.
I’m with Doug. PC has gone too far. ‘‘If you set the table, they will come.’’ It’s true of the homeless, and it’s true of sharks.

If we play on the freeway, someone is bound to get hit by a car.
