Solid Paulownia alaialike Surfboard

Hello Everyone! I just finished my first Project and I would like to share some pictures with you.

It is more an experiment than a good or rather a undistinguished beginner shape.

The ultimate goal for me was to build a Surfboard without using any toxic materials.

That means, that I made first an extensive research to find the right materials

(robust, waterresistance, …). Second step was to do trials with some glues. Leaving them

a couple of hours in salty water … After all I just udes Paulownia Blanks, usual water resistant

woodwax to fill some cracks and splits, ecological Polymere-Glue to connect the blanks and

lightweight screws. To preserve the wood, I used a linseed-eucalyptus oil, what I

applied three times. The shape is based on an classic ancient alaia shape, but anyway

it has some modifications like a light nose rocker and a deeper concave, what you can call

more a channel, going straight from the tail through to the nose. There are also two small

keel fins made of solid beech wood. I don´t know why, but I made three kind of rails shapes.

The Tail part has sharp rails, the middle part has more rounded rails and the nose part has

soft rails. My mind was, that a heavy and large board like the woodpecker (I call it Woody Woodpecker)

is really easy to maneuver and it will also be difficult to hold a respectable line in the wall of a wave.

So I thought that I could achieve a better position with hard rails (Tail Part) but a forgiving ride due

to softer rails in the middle and front part too.

What do all you think about my project? Is it all rubish

If it doesn´t works, I can use it as a gardentable.

One step before oiling the Board, I saw three pieces to chamber the inside a little bit.

The dimensions are 6’ 6" Inch, 21" Inch, 2 3/4 and it has about 9,3 kg.

I hope that I can test my Board soon!

Regards Nik

PS: By the way, Swaylocks is the best forum I have ever seen!!!

my hat is off to you, sir.

you guys are so fortunate to have such affordable access to paulownia.

look forward to the ride report!

Actually I think it is a Paulownia Wood second choice! In compare to other

renowned Paulownia Wood Sellers (USA, Australia, …) mine was to cheap. I am

living in the middle of Europe and I think I can be happy to obtain Paulownia at all.

im diggin it, any bottom pics?

will post some pics in a couple of days. I have to change the bottom up for oiling
