Hey guys,
I just picked up a 2nd hand B. Bulkley fish (like the Lost roundnose fish model). The dims are 5’4" x 19 3/8" x 2 3/16" (tail width at 14.25")and it feels like the right amound of volume for me who normally surfs a 6’0" x 18 3/8" x 2 1/4"
Anyways, it was busted up a bit and dirt cheap so my original plan was to try converting it to a quad. But once I took the measurements, I was surprised to find that the front fins were pretty far back (10" off of the swallow tip)
It’s weird because I have another one of the same shapes and I went to the shop and measured a few and all of the side fins are closer to 11"+ off the tail.
So what I am wondering is, what fin set-up would suit a board like this with the fins set so far back (they are FCS plugs as well)?
Should it be a ridden as a twin or with a set of smaller thruster fins (since they are closer to the tail)?
Thanks
Yo SharkBoy,
Buckley is one of the best quad shapers of them all.
With a rocker shot and one of the bottom along with some details of the bottom config. I can give you some direction as to what size fins to try. Either post them here or shoot me an email at .
Consider that with a relatively short board that being able to expand turning radius is more important than reducing it. This could be why the fins seem set a little far back. The tail is somewhat drawn in on this board so real deep fins aren’t a good idea. Start around 4.325" in the front and 3.75" in the rear. Check the Future site and see what you come up with.
No Worries, Rich
Thanks for the help!
I haven’t yet installed the rear fins. I was going to, with a friend’s advice, but when he saw that the front plugs were so far back (again, only 10" from tail) he thought it better to just ride it with two big fins. thing is, he also warned me that I blow out the FCS plugs with big fins if I turn too hard. Which I have on my other RNF shapes when ridden as twins
Since it is a ‘throwaway boar’ (i bought it used and slightly bruised), I was thinking of convering it to a quad anyways, rear at 4" or so, but I thought one of the major benefits of the quad was to move the whole cluster forwards for loosenesss but still have two fins on the rail while carving…
Halycon, you recommend 4.325" deep fins up front and 3.75" in back for the quad, if I test it as a thruster before the conversion should I just go all 4.325"?
thanks again
I’ll try to get some pics next time, as for the bottom, it’s single concave with vee out the tail (vee starts further up)…sounding more like a twin fin as I type.heheh
