Some installed probox fin systems...these things are pretty cool.

I have been looking at fin box systems for the boards I produce. These are pretty darn cool set ups. Taken from another thread discussion. Pics say more than words sometimes.

Comments welcome.

I have seen them on Bings and Beckers as well.

I agree wholeheartedly. I surf & build single fins. I’m a total novice (or even jackass) about multiple-fin setups. I started emailing Robin (“hand-shaper” on Sways) about Probox & quads about a year ago…

He sent me the goods (great price) and didn’t hesitate to provide optimum installation specs - location, toe-in, and cant insert.

I made the board for a friend…who’s loving it. Thanks to Robin (& Probox). Without his help, I was clueless…

Iv’e got Probox on 3 of my boards.

Last board the box was placed too far forward by 1/2".

It is a much bigger deal over FCS plugs to extricate the Probox boxes and move them by 1/2" or whatever it needs.

Easier just to have a new finset made to accomplish this.

So actually I’m trying to contact the Probox fin maker on Oahu so I can get a fin set with the tabs more forward by 1/2".

So far…it seems the fin maker surfs too much.

Still waiting for a reply.

Very easy installation. We made a five fin setup for the owner of Freedom Surf Shop (See below). If a person loves to play with the set up of their fins they will be busy for months. Imagine the endless combinations of fin types and cant setups.

Benny…cool board. Love those rear fins. How do those work? What would you think of a probox set up on your Horan?

Otis,

Try contacting Robin direct instead.

Some time back Robin had “Fin Blanks” which were square fibreglass panels with the fin tab milled… you just need to template and foil the fin you want and off you go.

Benny, tell us about that boards construction. thx

Thanks Cam,

that will be my fallback position.

Solo - It was super easy to set up with Robin’s specs. I never got a chance to surf it. I may do the same setup for a kiteboard for in the surf, though, since the guy who’s been on it says its best when things are happening really fast.

Greg - its 1# EPS core with bamboo skins. Foaming polyurethane glue under the skins (no glass) applied in a vac bag. Then 1" divinycell rails (2 - 1/2" pieces) and one layer 4 oz glass over, top & bottom. Probably the most bulletproof board I’ve ever made.

Its a 6’0 fish-shape quad. I blew the outline a little - used the template for a 6’4 fish and just drew the front, moved it up, and drew the back. Forgot to smooth the bump that made in the outline - you can probably see the ‘pregnant’ bulge in the photo. D’oh! Oh, and the nose rocker is a little wonky since I had a little vac-bag drama. But with fins & boxes, its only about 7 lb. So I got that goin’ for me…

6’0 x 23" wide x 3" thick. Tips at 12" apart & crack 5" deep.

I might do another with almost the same specs, but only 2" thick and 20" wide as an in-the-surf kiteboard. For my size, that would be just about right.

Solo, I think the fin setup has a lot of merit for widetails. I already hotwired out an EPS blank in the 8’0 range for my second set of the same boxes & fins I bought from Robin at the time. Squared-off roundtail around 18". It’ll have a basic Nugget shape, with those 4 boxes…and a longboard center just in case. A chipfish special, sure to make him er excited. Same construction - 'boo & d-cell. Unless the next 2 kiteboards I’ve already started take up all the PVC, then it might get balsa & foam rails like Drew Tang’s (which I’ve been admiring greatly).

Aloha Otis:

I just got an email from someone asking the same question because the shaper had put the marks in the wrong position. If that was you I sent you an email stating that we can easily get some custom fins made for you. If it was not then please email me or call the number below, or better yet do both and I can help get things moving along for you.

Give Larry in our California office a call at: 310-530-1383, he can make you anything you need. Or email me if you have more questions, mahalo!

Aloha Benny1:

Man that board looks sweet, really stoked that the whole fin setup worked out for you, happy to help!

I’ve attached a photo of the same quad setup but with a cutaway version of the elliptical fin.

-Robin

Yeah Robin. Good stuff. Your fins, boxes, and help were spot-on. I’m sorry I didn’t send photos of the board before, but I was embarrassed about the blown outline.

The next one…you’ll get good photos.

All is copasetic

Thanks.

I never thought to ask Robin for fin placement specs…

First time I ordered from ProBox I went direct to Robin (handshaper) via e-mail. Second time I also had great service with Robin via e-mail. I just bought three thruster sets from Larry in the L.A. area. We did the whole deal over the phone.

Looking forward to seeing boards from Solo with ProBox.

Nice quad Benny

Beautiful board Benny! The bamboo lam looks soooooooo darn cool. How does your friend like that fin setup?
