lamed the entire board. when i went to prep the overlap from when i lamed the deck the glass yellowed a bit from usig my surform. i was just sanding the overlay so when i went to hotcoat there wouldn’t be a ridge. i tried using less speed but i was only using a surform to level the edges. how to you guy do this or deal with it. thanks.

…if its kind of dirt, you may clean it with acetone…also, seems to me that your surform is not clean…

Slight rust on the blade perhaps. A quick dip in some swimming pool acid, or a long dip in vinegar will clean the blade.

Howzit Thrailkill, I stopped using sureforms years ago due to the cancer, which is the nick name for rust on Kauai. I use 50 grit paper for taiking down the rail laps these days. I have to keep my good glass cutting scissors in acetone and they still rust, gotta love the tropics. I should take a picture of my car.Aloha,Kokua

…but you HAVE had it a WHILE , Mike , haven’t you ??

hmmm…I thought i had used a new blade. I’ll pay more attention next time. Thanks for the info though.

I had tried sandpaper to level the lap and got sand (from the paper) caught in the lam weave. Are you still able to clean out the sand? i remember it being pretty damn tough for the small section i tried using it on.

thanks,

I started using a sharp vixen file to smooth out the laps. I found it better than sandpaper and the surform. I keep the file covered when I am not using it to prevent rust.

Put a microplane blade on the surform. They’re stainless steel. About $9 at Fiberglass Hawaii…

Did you say “rust”!!!

Not just the tropics…

Howzit neira, Now I know I've got to take a picture of my van. That rust on your car is minor. They used to have a contest here for the rustiest car that still was legal and you couldn't believe some of the cars. Aloha,Kokua
