source for wood stringers

Anyone know were to get wood stringers in the San Diego area?

Any store that sells wood or high density foam… Lowes, Home Despot, boat manufacturing companies carry D-cell and C-cell foam, plastic manufactures carry PVC.

Thanks OTAY. Asking around at the harbor sounds like a good idea. All I can find at HD, Lowes & Frost in the neighborhood of 1/8" thickness is door skin and MDF. The doorskin is brittle stuff. Maybe I’ll just use PVC.

What size board? They sell clear cedar and redwood there. A table saw, planer, jigsaw would be all the tools needed to make it.

Hi Tom ,

I know two Swaylock’s guys in SD that have balsa strips aprox 4"x4’. We have made stringers out of it but it is not one long clean piece. I’m working a deal right now to score some more of the PVC material so contact me before you spend any money on PVC stringers. There was a company in Oceanside selling stringers with Clark rockers but I don’t remember their name. They might be gone now…

Ray, thanks, I’ll search for that O’side company and if that doesn’t turn anything up I’ll check back with you about the PVC. The balsa sounds good but I think the stuff you used was around 1/2" and I don’t have a bench mount style thickness planer. By the way, if you have any fin or tail block projects coming up I can get you a block of exotic wood.

Thanks Jim!
