I just read that you guys are having 75˚, even 77˚ water temps- is that true?
I trunked it in Santa Barbara the other day for over an hour. There were 20-30 of us out. Nobody had a wetsuit on.
Water’s around 73 at dawn around LA. Trunks are fine, girls in bikinis in the lineup everywhere.
74° right now at 8am and it was up to 77° here in San Clemente this week but there are still a few dingbats wearing full suits.
There’s been wahoo caught again off socal and some of the long range boats that normally would be fishing way down off Baja have been fishing in US waters.
I’m betting it gets up to 80° at some point.
Life guard at Malibu said it has been around 75 and they had an 80 degree reading at Torrance Beach recently…felt comfy this AM as opposed to Oahu where the water is almost to the point of too warm!!
Bath water in Oceanside.
Guy out in the water Sunday said his watch said 77 Degrees.
Wetsuit companies are going out of business.
Hurray global warming!
Can’t keep wax on my board!
Just got out. I’m going home to take a hot shower so I can cool down. Lol
I’m an old wimp. I love it.
if you want the detailed scoop on this years El Nino from a surfers point of view, suggest Stormsurf, friend’s free surf forecast site. Excellent source for forecasting swells as well, used for decades by Mavericks crew.

I personally check local water temps a couple times a week with a tank thermometer that’s used to develop film. It is very accurate. I started doing it years ago to settle debates among my friends when the old “feels warmer/no it doesn’t” debates would occur. Took the guesswork and conjecture out of the equation. About a week ago I got a reading of 75 degrees. That is the warmest I’ve seen in roughly 30 years of doing this. Previous high was 73. Contrast that with the fact that last Winter the water hit 28 and there was ice floating offshore in open water. Our water warms up solely due to the Gulf Stream. As it eddies and changes course the water temp fluctuates. Yesterday, I got a reading of 68. That’s more typical for Summer around here.
Buoys near Long Island were up close to 80 about a week ago.
