Spackle ( Home depot choices?)

This question has been addressed, but I want to know what everyone’s current spackle of choice is. I got the wonderful pleasure of using Dap Patch-n-Paint only to realize in actually dries noticably grey. What container do you grab at Home Depo?

Dap Fast n' Final

or ace hardware's red devil light spackle.

Fast n Final at Lowe’s.

if you paint over the spackle with water based acrylic, is it necessary to seal the paint prior to glassing?

no

The Home Depot in San Marcos does not have Dap Fast and Final. But the Lowes on the other side of the freeway has it. The new Lowe's in Carlsbad is going to be massive....and I have to drive past it every day after work. More traffic nightmares........I was looking for a thread from a few weeks back and stumbled on some Spackle ........have fun!!!

Guess I gotta get some Fast-n-Final. Now if only HD carried Krylon H20… Any recommendations of paint brands to shoot on foam (through a gun/airbrush)? Thanks for the recommendations. Sways always has good choices, but they frequently can be a little tricky to find locally.

Tempura poster paint. non-toxic, water cleanup. thin it, shoot it. If you want clean lines, make sure that blank is fine sanded after your spackle job; the tape will have better bite on the surface.

…and thinnning: spakle w/distilled water, same with the water based tempura.

**I had a question myself about shooting water based paint: **anyone ever added a bit of **denatured alcohol **to their tempura for a faster dry? Maybe a smoother paint job, especially through the gun components? Just a thought, I’ve been playing around with the alcohol these days…

EDIT: scratch denatured alcohol + tempura. The two together aren’t soluable for some reason. Just ran a test.

my discovery from like 11-12 yrs ago.

i use acrylic floor polish to thin............. plus it makes the paint waterproof after it drys.............it retards paint pul-up when taped over...............future floor polish if i can get my hands on it.........supercrylic at smart n final works too !

Isn’t this stuff called Pledge Future Shine now? http://www.amazon.com/Johnson-11182-27oz-Pledge-Futureshine/dp/B000ARPH4C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1377196354&sr=8-1&keywords=acrylic+floor+polish

Yes.

BTW, anyone notice the big puddle of oilly substance in the bottom of the Fast-N-Final bucket?  I wonder if its doing the same as Futures?  That puddle of oilly stuff never gets mixed well because you can’t really stir a tub of spackle until its half empty.

Maybe I should transfer the spackle to a larger tub, so it’s easier to mix and get all the oil in the bottom.

yup, totally (although no idea if the same substance as Futures, but insightful someone else notices this.). What I’ve been doing is transferring half the spackle out the big tubs and into an empty tub, then diluting w/distilled. I keep mine runny, like melted ice cream. Seems to be finishing really nicely, product stretches a bit further.

I do the same.

But, I’m spooked about putting any water in my tub. I had mildew spots in couple of boards. So now, I throw out any diluted spackle not used.

If you’re near a home Depot, you’re probably also near a Sherwin Williams, SW shrink free spakling leaves em all in the dust.

what about a bit of hydrogen peroxide or bleach in the spackle to inhibit mold growth?

EDIT: I’ve heard of guys thinning with denatured alcohol–will this type of alcohol feed mold or supress it?

Thanks!  I’ll give it a try.

details Drew?

I’m about to go pick up some spackle today.

My local Sherwin only has the 1qt size, gonna try one see how it goes. **What makes it better than every other spackle? How do we know Dap and Sherwin aren’t made in the same factories? **If it’s a touch whiter or mold-proof, then cool. Otherwise, spackle is spackle, ~98% applied is sanded off anyway + depending on your skin, like nylon, you won’t be able to detect color inconsistencies between foam and spackle (unless you really screwed up and got dirt, mold or tainted water in your spackle).
