Swaylocks- looks to me like this website is THE LAST STAND of soulful surfboard design and construction sharing on an international level. Congrats! But the dark buzz is you guys more than irritate some of the bigger industry players. This just in: THE FREE EXCHANGE OF IDEAS IS A GROWING THREAT. Words?

I’ve been backyard since '71 and “R.” and many others know it. There’s nothing better than shaping your own board, how you want it, when you want it, with your own designed Laminates, airbrush, etc. and surfing like a bat out of hell on it!.. In the newer video “Shelter” there is a scene where Joel Tudor is hand shaping a thick blank outside with only a sureform in a country cabin type atmosphere, all the boys(Machado,Malloys,Donovan,Gerlach) are riding fish’s, singlefins, stingers. Very 70’s…I was there!!!. The kids now need a creative outlet which surfing gives(and board ‘variety’ is more attractive than ever). Making your own board(ala Innermost limits of Pure Fun)is a satisfaction NOBODY can take away from us!!! No offense to career board builders(you know you all garaged it too back in the day!!)I still get chills when i see an old Bertleman/Button’s photo, or Curran(late 80’s)out at backdoor with no LOGO’s pissing off his sponsors. Thank you Joel T. for kicking the mainstrean, I know you could still be winning with trifin helicopters, but you bucked the system, good for you!!!(bad for Takayama). The floodgates are open and as long as you have less than 5 gallons of resin at your house you aren’t in violation. Don’t laugh if you see me on a stringerless triple winged pintail with rocketfish keels and volanglass using isotalic resin! Why…cause i can!!!
Donny, I appreciate the compliment – but honestly, I don’t think of things are quite like that. My guess is that if you were to say “Swaylock’s” in a conversation to someone in the mainstream surfing industry, most would say “what?!” Mike
Yeah, I got that “what?!” from the guys at surf source the first time I went and they wanted to know how I heard of them. Guess that would have been about 1 1/2-2 yrs ago. I bet they know the name pretty well by now.
Naw I don’t think they(Surf Source)know ,I’ve mentioned it to them several times and all they ask is “why would you want to help others?” or" don’t you know it all by now"—the answear is not even close and I agree with Surfhungry making your own is the best–by the way make that triple winger pin a triple fang wing pin-why cause you can------all these years and I’m still a garage builder at heart and Mike -keep up the great work -this site is the best

I can’t seem to get off the hippie vibe this week. The following came my way in regard to a physical gardening mystery concerning plant identification, but I thought it applied pretty well to the whole Swaylock’s Experience. “The answer is never the answer. What’s really interesting is the mystery. If you seek the mystery instead of the answer, you’ll always be seeking. I’ve never seen anybody really find the answer - they think they have, so they stop thinking. But the job is to seek mystery, evoke mystery, plant a garden in which strange plants grow and mysteries bloom. The need for mystery is greater than the need for an answer.” - Ken Kesey For me, with every answer and step I find several new questions… Nels

P.S. What ever happened to Terry Deloach? He used to ride my boards back in the 70’s,hope he is O.K. I believe that you and he dominated during that time.

I work in the surfboard industry(a second generation surfboard builder in a 25 year old factory) not only do I like Swaylock’s I gave it publicity with a write up in Longboard magazine. The only negative comments I’ve heard are about backyard guys who crave information from the professionals, but at the same time have somehow labled the pros “sellouts”. Hobbyist and enthusiast are not a threat to any full time board builder. In fact, we must all strive for high quality craftmanship in order to stave off the wretched third world surfboard factories owned by non-surfing “action sports” corporations. In the meantime enjoy the craft and the camaraderie.

Donny…from the dawn of time, free exchange of ideas has been both a threat to some and a salvation to others. This is one of the single most important things we (supposedly) have as Americans (I’ll extend that to HUMANS…as it OUGHT to be). The so-called “garage” shapers are hindered - solely/(soul-ly)- by their access to resources…and their own creative blocks. Never give up on a dream if it pleases you (provided it doesn’t harm others). A lot of sweet “music” comes from our collective imagination! Aloha! (p.s. Nice words, Surfhungry, and - Herb - I agree…everything is subject to “counterfit” as soon as it leaves your mind and becomes a physical product! There are, already, too many people working for some fat cat- under god knows what kind of conditions - in factories, “overseas” - to put a small amount of food into their mouths). Let’s not lose our souls for the sake of false riches! Peace! T.
