...speaking of Bob Mctavish ...

…there’s a GREAT article in the latest Surfing World magazine about his foot length , fin placement and tail-width experiments / theories .

A VERY interesting read , highly recommended !!

cheers !

ben

…hopefully you might be able to see it on a website eg : www.surfingworld.com.au ???

okay ,

since it's now three months since i originally posted this ,

and there have been NO replies at all [??!!] , I am  hoping the article  can be scanned and posted here ,  as I'd LOVE to see sways shapers , among others, take his idea and run with it , and report their findings back here !

i'm sure it will make a noticeable performance difference to boards [in good waves , especially !] , and when 'the guys on the tour' get ahold of the idea and start using it in their contest boards , and everyday surfing , maybe they will find that it is , indeed, "a design breakthrough" , as Bob has suggested in the article !

I'm just STOKED that Bob McTavish is working on it with Kelly Slater , so I'm sure you will be hearing and seeing more on this issue ...

  cheers !

Hi Chip,

I read the article, it made a lot of sense about fin placements so i have done a board using the info so i can make up my mind if it really is going to work, I havnt had a chance to surf the board yet but will keep you posted as soon as I have…

Heres a pic of the fin setup ( front fins set up to my foot size) as you can see considerably further in from the rail to a standard setup…

This makes a lot of sense.....which is why I like my fins right under my feet! Centre of effort theory.

Adjusting tail width is definitely a suitable point of allowance for foot size.

Fin size, and shape.

And the set-up 1-2-3-4-5

Lots of answers. All right.

great stuff "Nocean" !! .....good on ya !

let us know how it rides eh ? [ie: what you notice different / better ....]

Hi 'Wildy' !!  i'd be rapt if you do a few boards with this [?'firewires'? are you still with them ? .... i noticed your change of location ....]

cheers guys ! thanks HEAPS for the replies

i'm hoping the 'moonman'  ['?mr.squiggle? hahahaa]  will be able to post the scan here , for ALL to read , please Shannon ? cheers !

Hey Chip,

I read it, said "Ho-hum, Bah humbug"

Why?

Because relating foot size to fin placement and tail width is absolutely not new, let alone Bob's original thought.

Its a factor in my custom shapes, an awareness thats almost always been there, nonetheleast because I have huge feet.

There's no shine lost on Bob's illustrious career, but that claim is, like, a last-grasp at attention, a media beat-up.

…if you put the fins too forward you should put fins with more cutaway and more rake…

more spin from the spin king himself

**i would imagine you belive the v bottom spin as well.
**

ZING!!!

I used to do that.....now I just put two fins.

yes it could bear  with some honest debate?
