Speedfins? Who Knows?

I have read the few reports on speedfins on swaylocks but they aren’t very in depth, does anyone have any more information or first hand experience. I have had enough of FCS, flimsy attachment of fins etc. and would like to know more about speefins. especially now that some of the pro’s are starting to use them. So if anyone Can let me know, I would aprreciate it, so I cn a make an informed decission. Thanks Michael Pearce

We are suppossed to get a Speeedfins demo soon, but the more time ive had the more leary i get, thier pro mick fanning ive seen about a dozen times recently in photos and real life always with glass ons. Ill post more info when the rep comes in, Im not a big fan of the slow cure either. Well see However im a HUGE fan of Red-x if i could chose only 1 system id take that hands down. If installed correctly its stronger than anything else ive used, ive had a few problems, but the failure ratio with FCS is much higher. http://www.paradoxdistribution.com

Thanks, I look forward to what you get out of the rep. I must agree if speedfins are no good I’ll get Red-X. Not good that you been seing Mick with glass -ons recently! I have also been looking out for the fins on his boards. The idea of speedfins just sounds so good, I have to find out! Thanks Michael Pearce

We just switched over to speed fins. The system is simple and fast to install and the composites are of good quality. the design is simple yet genius, rider feed back has been good. Some benefits are ) they are cheaper than any other fins system, they are very easy to install, the install kit runs under 30 bucks if you already have a futures router, The fins snap in and out with ease. great for those quick changes one may want to make. No more stripped allen wrenches. We really like the system and it seems to make boards feel more alive. hats of to the boyz from OZ for this one.

That’s good to hear, I may just give them a go. What about the plugs do they seem strong, well made, etc. anything you can think of you don’t like. Do any of your team guys want to go back to what they were using? Thanks for the response Michael Pearce

from what ive heard from some peple i know who have speed fins is not good…this one guy tried them for 1 session and took the board back to his shaper…and what can you say if speed fins computer generates the picture of speed fins onto mick fannings board for a speed fin ad…kinda sheating huh…they must pay him alot of money for positive feedback

I am a graphic designer so I know photoshop backwards, I also noticed the fins looked a bit dodgy on the ad!

Like I intws theres a trip with him from 2 months ago, several pics, NO SPEEEDfins theres 3 e’s ya know… The cruelest irony is speeed fins use slooooow cure Like I said Im all up to what they have got, anythings worth a shot to get away from FCS http://www.paradoxdistribution.com

I would give the fins a shot if they made them for other systems. I think sooner or later their pros will have to start using them if they want to keep their credability with their other sponsors or keep getting checks from speedfins.

Hi all, i wish to state some facts about Fanning with glass on’s as opposed to his spono-ed Speeedfins. Mike and i have been working together to refine the template he likes to ride. This new fin is now available and Mick is stoked. So why is he spotted still riding glass on’s? Mick is committed to the World Title and with this season racing to an end he is not about to change horses in mid stream. His present technic is built on those glass on’s and he plans to complete this season the way he started. Mick’s commitment to Speeedfins is equal to his charge on the world title and he plans to hoan his style, employing the added power and speed of Speeed for the circut next year. Mick’s involvement with Speeedfins has furthered this new and unique concept, his persistance in reducing the over all weight of his boards has lead to fantactic technical improvements to our system mwhich are now in our pipeline. We don’t intend to rush, ‘for less haste…more speeed’ ! Speeedfins are a remarkable, positive change to the stop start surfing of conventional rigid fins, so if ya tossing up whether to try Speeed, take the time to read the rider raves on www.speeedfins.com. There are heaps and heaps of surfers around the globe raising the standard of their surfing from the very first ride on Speeedfins, and i’m won of them. Stop screwin’ around…gd http://www.speeedfins.com

We’ve had a test board in our shop for a number of weeks now. Every person who rode the board had either neutral (couldn’t tell any substantial difference) or positive (increased speed) feedback. The only negative has been on a retro-fitted board that felt tail-heavy but in all fairness the board basically had TWO fin systems in it. From the technical standpoint Speeed (3 e’s) Fins is an installers dream. Our fin guy is super stoked and I got to admit everything I can see is quite ingenious. The stick on jig/resin dam is insane. Wished I had similar for the other systems out there! We’ve been shooting the resin fairly hot and there have not been any shrinkage problems; I’ll keep an eye out for any problems. Note that the glass powder we use in FCS is useless for this application, be sure you use 1/8" milled fibers. From the aesthetic point of view, installing with tinted resin looks really cool; we did one in a swirl the other day, kids love them. Personally, it seems that resin consumption is a little more than desired but I have been reassured the re-design will use less resin. Functionally, the fins will be great when applied to a shape that will exploit their potential. Jimmy Banks possibly has something here. As far as robustness, we haven’t broken any yet, but we don’t know if they are as strong as Red-X. It would be nice if there was some adjustability like Red-X. (I’m tempted to use a Red-X in the back of our prototype boards to dial the shape in further). We got a set of graphite Speeed Fins that seem almost ceramic; just waiting for enough swell to push those fins to get a feel…

This from Jim’s website: Future Fins ~ offer the best range of high performance fins and can be easily modified to achieve the “Banks effect” that was the basis of the Speedfins principle www.futuresfins.com What’s up? Rob Olliges http://www.jimbanksurf.com/Surfboards/design.htm

What is the “Banks effect”?

Basically…in regards to Jim it was like a child’s game of street cricket…he didn’t want to play the rules so he took his bat & ball and went home. If you look up the speeedfins website you will learn that the so called “Banks effect” was discovered by accident by Graeme “gravy” Davey when he was surfing his kid’s foamy. Gravy then knew he was onto something and went about putting 10 yrs of research into what is now known as Speeedfins. My recommendation to the other guys wondering about whether to try speeedfins is stop woffling on about it and waiting for an aproval from pro surfers…get out there, be an individual and have your own opinion…you all obviously work in the industry. How hard can it be to put in a set of fins and get out there and do the only proper testing…which is do it yourself. JC

I would aslo like to know what the “Banks effect” is. And does anyone know when the latest update/version of the speedfins will be released? I didn’t know that Mick was such a perfectionist when it comes to his surfing and speedfins, that story was a pretty good spin on the topic of him not using speedfins at the moment. But sooner rather than later, I am going to want to see some hardcore pics of these pro’s surfing the fins, nice close ups, FCS got it right in there little fin booklet. If the fins are so good they shouldn’t be hiding them. The market is ripe for any worthy newcomers so they should be showing them off.

By your post, I assume you’re wondering why the link to Futures Fin Co. takes you to Speedfins website? I don’t get it either! Here’s a link to Futures… http://futuresfins.com/futures.html

We posted a resonse earlier. The speedfins system is very user friendly to install/ less expensive than both future/fcs. They are of high quality and we have had good feedback from riders. Now of course surfers we have put on this system are able to generate speed all by themselves even if we put uneven soda pop can in place of a thruster setup. SO our advice is spend the 27 bucks and give um a go. I think that you all will be surprised at how user friendly they are to install. The avocado dams even have ridges in them to set the jigs into, very well thought out. We scored our guides a little more to ensure quick even installation. I really like the system, asnd like most were skepticle at first. A very good tip is to make sure you score the the foam under the glass, this ensures strength when popping the fins in and out. If not let the board sit for at least 5 days before a guy takes it in the soup. Good luck MIKE

I have had speedfins in my last three thrusters I am larger so I ride 7’0"s mainly . They are so easy to install and the staff and sales reps are really helpfull and sevice is great. The fins themself I put in all of my stock shortboards and recomend them for shortboards and guns. My wife purchased me an outer island 7’2" flextail. with speedfins it is the loosest fastest thing in the water. I have not had one snap or a box torn out but donotdoubt It could happen and cause alot of damage but smash any system and they all cause damage . Check the web site and try them I reacon they go unreal and from a shapers point of view they are so easy to install. j

Tested them, dont like them all that much, 4wfs are the way to go http://www.surfingireland.net
