Speeedfin box installation

Hi,

I was recently given several sets of Speeedfin boxes and fins.  I believe these are the original boxes as they don't have the airplugs.  Some of the boxes have white inserts and some have red inserts, which I assume is related to cant angle.  I can't find any markings to indicate left/right/center, or front/rear.  I also got some of the foam resin dams and a routing template, but I don't know how to orient the fins or the proper routing depth.  From searching the archives, these were apparently reasonably popular some years ago, so I'm hoping someone can enlighten me.  Any information on how to install these boxes would be appreciated.

mark where your fin goes first

  • look on the dam, does it have 2 holes in it, diamond shaped?

  • inspect the box, does it have plastic dots on top?

  • is your router a guided bit, with the bit as wide as thee guider?

place the diamond shaped holes over the fin dots, holding it in place somehow, maybe double sided tape? 3/M spray glue or something else…

the depth you have to route can be found  this way:

unplug router and turn it upside down on the bench

place the dam on top of the router, the bit through its hole

then place the finbox on top of that dam, with the opening on top.

adjust the depth of router till the plastic dots on top of the finbox are higher than the extremity of the router bit

fix that depth on your router

when you route, start in the middle, work towards the edges, this way you dont get chunks of foam/resin/wood, that will fuck your router up, maybe your eyes even

the stringer route should be done routing the stinger lengthwise first, removing the woord slowly

once gone, work towards the edges

another tip is when you route, to follow the direction in which your bits turns - smooth steady routing

oh and show us pictures and give some feedback on those fins, i used to love em to death

Hi Wouter,

Thanks for the input.  I'm going to try these on a board I'm repairing.  I'm looking forward to seeing how the install turns out and how well they perform.

If you're interested, I've got several sets and would be happy to set you up with a set, although I have no idea what shipping would be.  PM me if you're interested.

 Thanks Again,

Ray
