The mini spokeshaves the surf suppliers sell are the exact same ones you can find in Harbor Freight. I also found the finger plane that one of the surf suppliers is selling as part of a set in Harbor Freight.
My favorite for getting into deckside nose flips was the curved-base wooden Japanese planes that Clark Foam sold. US Blanks might still sell them now, they sell a lot of the same supplies (microplane rasps, visorgogs, etc) that Clark had.
Lotsa guys now just use a die grinder (or similar) and finesand carefully without needing to plane.
Track down THE JAPAN WOODWORKER, they have a wide selection of OUTSTANDING wood bodied planes, many sizes, as well as spokeshaves, also many sizes. I still use the Japanese plane that I bought in 1963. It produces shavings like tissue paper.
zona mini spokeshaves are the way to go, pretty cheap and small
I think it’s woodworking or woodworker.com, they have several different brands and models, but the prices, ouch.
Anyone have any luck rounding the edges slightly on regular blades to avoid foam sheer?
