Wanted to know if anyone out there knows anthy thing that can be done to an old 8’ sponge board. I was givin this board to help teach kids to surf, but when I put it in the water it soaks up water and gets really heavy. Is there any way to seal the board so it doesn’t soak water and make it hard to ride? I think the deck would be the only thing to seal since the bottom is slick? Thanks Mark http://www.scottsurfdesigns.com
Mark: Just thinking out loud here. Absolutely must hang it out to dry well. Then what about trying (test if you can) a quart can of that roll on bedliner rubber in a can. May have to hunt for something light in color but I know they make it. Tape off a lap on the bottom. We have one like that,we dry it out as best we can and then wax the daylights out of all raw worn spots.Don’t let any little ones ride it without a fullsuit or they’ll get a historic rash and might never want to go surfing again.thanks for being good to kids.
You might try painting on some stuff called “Rubberize It” after you dry the board out. It comes in different colors and is tough as hell. Similar to “Tool Dip” that you could dip a tool handle in for a protective coating. A friend called the company and bought a couple of gallons and used it to coat soft paddle boards he shaped. The finish was crummy but it was flexible and water tight. Try “Rhodes American” 1-800-621-8934.
