Recently a trend has been occurring in the America’s Cup. The top sponsors have recently contracted the top atheletes and then back burnered them so they won’t have to compete against them. In the last America’s Cup Oracle did this to Paul Cayard and in the up coming Cup the same situation appears to be forming with Russell Coutes and Allinghi.
In response to this trend and a few other stick in the mud moves, Russell and Paul are on the verge of starting a new event to rival the America’s Cup. They plan to make 80’ long one design mono-hulls the boat of choice and sail them with 10-12 people. Many of which will be on a trapeze wire. And the Dubai is looking to back this event.
Is this a good swift kick in the shin to the “establishment?”
they do that crap in many pro sports and businesses… pay coaches and trainers etc. not to coach other teams by making the “consaltants” that never really have to do anything…
competition breed such scum sucking attitudes as to dilute their credibility to zipinsky…who could so ever sail to china fastest…did so and the record held…for some time. ambrose…
I don’t know the answer to the original question about stickin it to the Establishment. I lost interest in the America’s Cup back when Uncle Ted was the skipper. Buch of corporate fat cats having a boat race is supposed to fill me with American pride? And, I’m a very proud red blooded American boy. The last I heard of the America’s Cup our guys built a catamaran to try and get the Cup back. What a disgrace. I prefer sailboat stories of Sir Francis Drake skiddaliing around the glope sacking Spanish(sorry Coque) galleons or single manned boats braving level 5 hurricanes or something. Mike
