Spray paint removal

Hi, UK newbie here

Was put onto swaylocks for some advice on the following problem…

Got a secondhand board, previous owner has sprayed the base black “for stealth”, or to cover the logo (some sponsorship mallarky)

Not sure exactly what type of paint it is, but I presume its the standard auto spray. Any thoughts on the easiest/cheapest way of removing it? I thought there might be some sort of readily available solution I could use that wouldnt react with the glass/finish. But somebody has suggested that I’d be best off sanding it down and going for a refinish. The board is worth about £80 ($130) to me, which makes it a pretty cheap board over here that i dont want to throw too much money at.

Cheers!

i would try to whip it off with acetone. sanding would be an option with a better result but is also more pricey. You could try to sand it off with a 180 grid or even 280grid. try not to sand to deep so probably it´s not necessary to re hotcoat it

good luck

Wow! That’s a lot of black paint! If it wre mine I’d opt for sanding and refinishing. It may take a while, but I’d go with 180 grit and a light touch. then a light gloss and finish after that. Good luck.

Ride on! Tom

How about painting over it. It be a lot more fun. Pretty cheap, too. Mike

i like rooster’s idea. Also you can apply a VERY SMALL amount of paint thinner and let it sit for a little while. dry the board and then wipe the board down with a cloth and some acetone. Worked decent on a friends bored i restored with the same problem. After that use 180 grit sand paper to remove the excess paint. Be patient and it will come out good. If ya rush it youll have to re-hotcoat it

Ahhh yes, removing spraypaint. #1 solution: Goo Gone, it’s a product offered in the states, I don’t know if you can find it in the U.K. Second solution: paint thinner. It takes a long time, but patience pays off. Sidenote: Whatever you do DO NOT use paint remover!! I made that mistake and came back 10 min later to find that the gloss coat and most of the hotcoat peeled up also, I had to refinish the entire bottom of the board. -Carl

Thanks for all the advice!

I was leaning towards the “add more paint” option but now I think I will at least have a shot at removal, with the solvents and light sanding.

Just to avoid a trans-atlantic misunderstanding, what do you guys call “paint thinner”? We brits mainly use something called “white spirit” for that purpose, which is hydrodesulfurised naphtha (petroleum). Acetone translates pretty easily. Paul

Edit: Also, how long’s “a while” in terms of leaving the thinner to sit?
