i tried out the design master series from michaels, and even after allowing it to cure for 6+weeks it totally ran. i am wondering ifi should have clearcoated it first…or if i had hit it with the full amount of hardener might have helped. this was my first attempt at shaping, painting, and glassing. it was recommended to me to use 5cc of hardener with my polyester resin as it was somewhat hot out and also my first time and i definitely needed more working time. as it stands it has been around 90 degrees out and two and a half days and it is still too goopy to sand out the burrs and drippys so that i may get to hotcoating. perhaps had i gone with 15cc of hardener it would have set up better and not allowed for sooo much time for the paint to melt down? i already have another board shaped and ready to go, but i would like to clear this up before botching up another board.-bosco
wow, it gets better. just went out to check the progress, and when shifting the board on the rack, the glass stuck to the rack and pulled away from the board. it would appear that even after 3 days i could just remove the fiberglass altogether by simply peeling it off the board. it is still that wet. i’m guessing that it shouldn’t be.
Howzit eviltwin, Now that just down right sucks. Was the board sitting on the sticky side of the tape? After 3 days any resin or epoxy should have been cured if mixed right. But always keep the wet resin side up and not touching the racks. Get some of that square foam that they sell for putting around window AC"s to seal the gap It sticks to the reverse tape on the racks and will hold the board in place while glassing it but won't pull the paint off the unglassed side of the blank. Did you try pressing the glass back down onto the blank instead of taking the glass off. Then you could try doing another batch of catalyzed resin over the previous layer to kick it all off. Aloha,Kokua
it is not too late to try that. thanks kokua, i’ll give it a shot and let you know. any idea how i could have avoided the paint running? perhaps if i had clear coated?
