Spraying over hotcoat

Hi All

I’ve just finished making a new board for myself and want to spray a bit of colour over the finished hotcoat.

Q:Would acryllic car paint in spray cans be ok to use?

Backyarder,

I’ve never used acrylic car paint. You can use Krylon acrylic spray paint, though. The stuff they recommend for plastic. Seal the color with clear acrylic spray paint. Mike

I think all kind of acrylic paint work well !

but in general car paint is made of PU ?!

Thinners based car acryllic is the paint of choice here in Australia. Sand the hotcoat to about 240 dry, paint and leave it over night. Spray some top coat clear (clear car acryllic) over the paint. If you are masking your design you will need to lightly sand the edges after removing the tape. Spray the tcc on fairly wet. Two or three coats. Watch out for runs. Again leave over night. To get the wet sanded look I use the 3M super fine foam sanding pads. Use with water like wet and dry sanding. Hope this helps platty.

Thanks to everyone who replied to my post, especially Platty who definately had what I needed.

Back yarder where are you?

If you are in the states the car paint will likely be water based because of environmental laws. Water based paint has its own big bag of tricks because it takes a while to dry and can leak under tape lines. This can be reduced by using top quality automotive masking tape.

if however you are in Australia, the car paint you most often buy is petrol based (Use a respirator!!!) Petrol based paint will dry in seconds. This is great for production time especially when theres several boards on the go. Petrol based acrylic is what is predominantly used here.

Thanks Speedy

I’m in Perth (Secret Harbour) so the petrol based acryllic looks good. I’ve just made my first board in ten years so my laps are standing out like dog’s balls. I figure a basic taped rail spray will hide any unpleasantness.

I often use touch up cans from supercheap or auto pro. On the filler or the foam.

Oh yeah I recently discovered how to see other swaylocks user profiles! And I would have saved all that space about the american paint thing had I just looked to see you’re in WA.

One tip for spraying on filler coat- dont sand finer than 240:- Finer than that and you can peel paint off with the tape when you think its all finished.

Thanks man, that’s good stuff
