Stand Up Paddle Board specs...

Sorry in advance if there’s a thread already for this subject. I tried the search function and after a few pages on the subjects of paddles and etiquette decided to just post a new one.

My shaper just got a “blank” (loosely referred to as a blank- it’s actually a huge block of foam) that we were going to use for a 12’0 paddleboard, but now for various reasons I’ve decided to have him make me a stand-up Paddle board. (the Various reasons being I already have several paddleboards, I have a stand-up paddle, the line-ups are clogged and I’m getting bored of paddling laying down and on my knees- the list goes on.)

Anyhow- my shaper hasn’t done one of these for a very long time and told me to come by and take a look at the blank and we’ll talk and I have no idea what I want. The blank is 12’ x 28" x??? He told me it’s really a thick chunk so I’m assuming like 12" or more, but I haven’t seen it yet. I’m mainly just going to put in some miles on it, maybe catch some small waves here and there but really it’ll be for paddling, not so much surfing.

I believe I want a really long board- probably we’ll get 11’6 or more out of it- and I believe I want it to be pretty stable- like 28". Beyond that I’m not sure. If I do surf it I think I’d like it to mimic my noserider but maybe with a little sharper rails- again- I dont know. My shaper is mainly a longboard shaper and leans more towards the old school- squaretailed noseriders with round rails. Oh- and it’s for the Big Island so there’s really not a ton of surf and the ocean’s flat a lot.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

How much do you wiegh?

For an 11’ 6" cruiser (paddling, maybe some small surfing) I’d say 27" is as narrow as you’d want. Wider is more stable obviously.

If you can squeek 28" out of it, you might as well.

Bottom, I’d say flat to the tail area where you may want to then add some vee; with a performance tucked under rail (no old school 50/50 rails for this one).

No nose concave. Flat.

Rocker should be flatter in the nose than you’d normally use. Tail rocker - add a little more.

Carve Nalu knows more about this than I. However, this is how I would style your board.

Thickness= 4" as a benchmark and adjust for your weight. Nothing less than 4" thick.

I’m not a shaper, nor do I play one on the internet. I do have some experience with these SUP boards, as I’m on my 7th one now.

Below is number 6 -

11’0

26" wide

4" thick

Here’s an article on SUP design.

read up on the different SUPs from Infinity HERE

lots of great info about the different designs and their intended use

pay special attention to the last one…should suit your needs well

There was a thread just last week: sup for kooks

Check that one out. Also read the great stuff posted by CarveNalu. If it’s for paddling, go for a real flat deck; boxy rails; at least 28" wide; 4+" thick and 12’ long with a 18" tail; flat to vee bottom.

Hey thanks you guys. This should be plenty to work with.

Especially liking the title “SUP for kooks”.Nice. I’m picturing my shaper seeing that in my hand, then looking up at my face, then totally straightfaced turning and walking away, then I hear him chuckling.

The help is much appreciated. Mahalo plenty.

Might want to try just a small bit of belly and a vee in the nose. It’ll surf like crap but paddle pretty good.
