Star Fin System

This past Xmas my girlfriend bought me a late 70’s (most likely early 80’s) Classical Glass twinnie shaped by Dave Endress. It has what I’ll call the “star fin system” and I was wondering if anyone has information about them. Here is a photo of the fins on my board.

Thanks for any help/info you can give.

Hi Everyone,

First time poster here. I live in NYC but grew up surfing new england.

I recently bought a 5’8” fish – shaped by Mad Dog (Bernie Crouch) from Florida. I think it is mid-80’s but am not sure. It came with two mismatched right fins and no left fin (heelside fin for regularfoots). The twin-fins are 5" tall with a 4 3/8 base. The box itself is 6".

There have been a few posts about this topic/system on the boards, but all the links are a year old. I’m trying to purchase a replacement left fin, or matching replacements for both fins. I’d be happy to trade one of my spare right fins (red or blue).

Does anyone here have a suggestion on where I might find one of these?

Thanks in advance,

Jonathan

This is a little off the topic of surfboards.

Okay, so I post a link with an address and phone number of a glasser in NC, and decide to check it out to see if it works. And it does. But as I read down the list of addresses I notice a town name that rings a bell: Shallotte.

It’s 20 years ago, late May 1985. I remembered sailing into Shalotte Point one evening around 7:30 pm as it got dark on a Cherubini 44. We got grounded out on a bar just 20 yards off the dock when we tried to turn a 50’ sailboat around in that narrow a channel well…dumb mistake. Silly place for a sand bar. So small we could not see it on the chart at night until later after we knew it was there. We were docking to make repairs, because we had a bad water pump. We powered off the bar just barely and docked. What a nightmarish 45 minutes that was, because that inlet current is unbelievable and because I got burned dumping buckets of water into the cooling system. Next day I yanked out the pump cutting up my knuckles in the process. We ordered a pump from Wilmington, but not until after we took a $80 cab ride to a tractor supply because I had read that Perkins diesels used the same block and I supposed the same water pump as on our Westerbeak 50 and I knew that McCormick or some kind of tractor used Perkins diesels. But we could not locate a tractor dealer who knew anything. Only one that didnt and a cab driver with a muffler tied up with coathangwire. Turns out the busted down McCormick bulldozer not 40 feet away in the sandy parking lot by our docked boat had a Perkins and it had the same waterpump. Damn I was right. But (A) I didn’t realize it till I had the old one out and the new one in and (2) I dont steal, and C if I had I might not have had time to go in the water. But that is just a side story. Except for the busted knuckles and burns and hull scrubbing swim which is next.

Well, anywho, we had two days to kill waiting for the pump shipment, so among other things like eating more shrimp than a man ever seen, at this bait shop /restaurant/dump called Tripps Fishing Center (I’m talking endless piles of these small fried river shrimp best in the world “Ya’ll like somemore?” till I was like a tick about to pop). One big chore was we scrubbed the bottom of the boat. In doing so I cut the palm of my hand real deep on a barnacle.

At night I read about Shallotte in some local papers I picked up and some travel cruising info on board. Turns out the Shallotte River was supposed to be the actual Fountain of Youth searched for by Ponce De Leon. I also read that there was a certain kind of reed that the local Indians said had healing powers and that the reeds produced a milky white substance that got in the water and made the river run white and bathing in that water was supposed to be therapeutic… Well as we scrubbed the boat the tide was going out and the water I noticed was milky white and full of some kind of dead reeds.

Interestingly my burns and knuckles were healed the next day and that deep cut healed in just 2-3 days, done complete gone. I could almost see it heal. I’ve never seen anything like it before or since.

Dave is still around, it is pretty hard to get in contact with him at his factory, your best bet is to call around 11 am or 2 pm

Thanks a bunch. I managed to get a hold of Dave today, but…no luck. The search for a Star Fin twinfin continues.

I’m trying to track down the Florida shaper (MadDog). As well. I’ll let you all know what I find.

Unfortunately I am also a member of the “star hunters”. Please post here if you have any luck locating any. I am trying to find a pair of replacement fins for what looks like an early 80’s natural arts.

YES… G&S made them.

Contact them and if they don’t have any (probably won’t)

Contract any reputable fin manufacturer to make some for you:

Larry Allison - Fiberglass Fin Company

Chuck Ames - True Ames Fins

Glen at Rainbow Fins

many others if you Google around

Or give some fin guy in your neck of the woods the work and pay them fairly for producing them for you. The design isn’t particularly difficult to reproduce. If I was still doing fin panels and such I could do this easily… not my bag these days.

Get 'er done…
