thanks for the imput guys on my last post. i have got a template i am looking at starting with and have made a blank to the same spec's as the "USBlanks 9'8 Y " i have copyed the rocker, outline of the web site
So right now i have a length of 9'6 1ft from nose 18 3/4 center 23 3/8 1ft up from tail 15 3/8 8 1/16 tail width. The nose rocker is 4 1/2 1ft in from nose 2 3/8 tail is 3 11/16 1ft back from tail 2 3/4
I was thinking of a tear drop concave in the nose and may be a rolled v though the rest of the board.with 50/50 rails
what do you guys think any suggestions on things that may not work before i start would be keen for some design feed back
cheers again i put some pics up of basic roof felt templates etc
If you use the little icon that looks like a tree to attach your photos instead of the upload attachment people won't have to leave your thread to view your pictures.
cheers for the tip will do that next time i load photos, i got the foam from "forman building solutions" they had blue as well its called Styrodur. price was good to trade was 30mm x 600 x 2570= $34 50mm 50mm x 600 x 2570 = $61 the foam is 30kg/m3
hi guys so heres the blank just got off rocker table and skinned it, put some lines on for the outline. the lines may not be as tidy as i liked but i was having pencil troubles ( only hard leaded pencils no soft) and had to use one of my kids coloring pencils!
i decided to drop the widths 1ft nose 1ft tail and center by 1/2 inch as looked a bit wide
so i need some advice on marking out the tear drop concave on the nose of my board i do not know how big to make it or how far in from the rails and tip of nose to start it. would really be grateful for some imput as i do not have any board to compare it to and have never shaped a noserider
also what do you guys think of a vee down middle of the board? whould something else work better
hey guy anyone got any imput on the teardrop concave and rounded vee, i have board all ready for concaves just want to make sure i am not going the wrong way with the rounded vee etc. i searched sways and did not find much about "log" bottoms. as i said i am new to shaping and donot have much idea on " old log stlye longboards" also whould i be better with egg rails instead of 50/50s. i plan to surf the board in up to head high max waves and was a bit unsure on the best approch to the rails
Gidday Twisted, I’m glassing a board very similar to the one you are making now, for old log style log boards 50/50 egg rails are the way to go & rolled bottom. The nose concave I have done isn’t too deep & goes about 1/4 of the length from the nose back also a bit of a tail kick. What your doing looks good, hope I’ve given you some help.
“also whould i be better with egg rails instead of 50/50s.”
You’re talking about two different things: “50/50” means that the apex of the rails is at an equal distance from deck and bottom when seen in profile. “egg” generally means the oval side of the egg (as opposed to the round one). But you can have 50/50 ROUND rails, 50/50 EGG rails, 50/50 PINCHY rails, each progressively decreasing in VOLUME. The more volume, the easier it is in small/slow waves. The less volume, the better it will fit large/fast waves. Guess what “in-between” is good for?
cheers guys input gives me a bit to read still abit confused on the term "turned up" rails at nose and tail.
anyway heres a few pics of the redwood panel inserts that i plan to put in the deck and tail block. i was planning to just do 26 inchs from tail and nose but i may do the whole board between the stringers. i was planning to gule in with epoxy and gule powder but i do not have vaccum pump so may try doing in 24 inch long panels weigh them down good that seems to get them sitting flat on the foam.
what you guys think will i have troubles with this setup?
so i guess i am abit worried about de-lams with this xps foam that why the timber on the deck if i understand right the de-lams come from presure dents gassing out after the foam cells have been crushed. so i was thinking this could help stop them. i was thinking the bottom would be ok with just glass?. what do you guys think? will the skins help? or not as they do add a lot of weight. i will not be doing timber rails just ending timber 1inch from the rail
yeah i ment to say the redwood panels are 1/4 inch thick and i am routering out the foam where there are going, should i put a layer of glass down when i epoxy them in?
i have done a lot more reading on here about that xps foam on old threads, seems like some guys have good luck others do not, i real do not what to add skins on the whole top of the board, if i 60 g the blank before glass to get good adhesion and put board in black bags in car on hot day to help gas out befor glass, i was hoping that i could just to the skin on tail and nose
what you think? anyone out there how has got a system for glassing this foam sorted that works
i got some time to work on board tonight so started to shape the rails they still need some work but starting to get closer. any way will put up photos if you see any problem areas please point them out as all the help i can get the better
so i got time to glass the bottom tonight, i used a faster setting epoxy this time and really liked it. got it from hardcore surf its that new clear west system it ment to be just like RR resin. so heres a few pics
