starting rail

hi everyone… this is my time to create my first rail… and my source of shaping “shaping 101”… but i havent got time to create FRED to make the “tuck under”… im wandering how do i create my tuck under with only using surform to make them equal each side… thank you…

This is how I do it. I have a Fred and don’t use it anymore. Measure up from the tail where you want the tuck to begin. I use the tip of my elbow to the palm of my hand. About 18 inches. Best to measure it first time. Place the board on it’s rail. Place the surform on the edge you are going to remove. Begin with just the weight of the tool and as you begin push the surform towards the nose increasing the pressure a bit as you proceed. Count the number of passes(Usually three for me). You now have one bevel.Put the surform on one of the new edges and repeat. Count them. Usually two passes for me. Put the surform on the other new edge and repeat. I end up with three bevels. Repeat on the other rail. Use a light hand near your 18 inch transition or your tucked under edge looks abrupt and not a smooth transition. Wish I could show you. Fred is easy and quick to make. Its more consistent, too. Dave Verner showed me the above technique. I tried it and liked it.Hope this helps.Mike
