Apparently it’s not nearly sold out. I didn’t have time to go down and get tickets and resigned myself to missing it, but my wife insisted that I should take a break, so she went down and got a pair for me and a buddy. I’m not sure which show they’re for, I’ll find out after work.

Dirk what did you think? I was at 8 pm show.

Howyadoin’ Kirk…too bad I missed you. I went to the 6 o’clock show. There were only about 35 folks in there and the energy was pretty low. I was the only one who let out a couple of hoots, and I felt like kind of a wierdo…doesn’t anyone hoot at surf movies anymore?

The overall film lacked structure, or rather the way it was organized into “chapters” seemed like an attempt to impose some structure onto a potpourri of clips. Many of the shots were excellent though, some that I’d seen before, some that were new to me. Maybe the movie is a work-in-progress and I should take another look once it’s more developed.

The music, especially the opening theme, was pretty cool, and it was obviously great to get to concentrate on such great surfers as Greenough, Curren, and Fanning. The Curren sequences had me hooting. It’s not like I haven’t watched him enough both on screen and in the lineup, but he’s just unreal and still amazes me.

I’m always a bit hesitant to give a less-than-glowing review, and I want to focus on the positives. I’m glad I saw it, mainly because I wanted to watch the mat riding closely. Every time I see a decent mat shot, I learn something about riding them. That last chapter was all about Greenough finding the energy on his mats, and he’s got a lot to teach us if we just watch carefullly, I think I’d purchase a video or DVD of “State of S” just to examine that part over and over a few times.

Hey, when do you think Dale will produce the first all matriding movie?

Hi Dirk !

you’ve probably already seen them if you’re a mat riding enthusiast also, but if you haven’t, then try and get hold of ‘children of the sun’, ‘crystal voyager’, ‘the innermost limits of pure fun’, and ‘fantasea’.

Different decades some of them, but all good, all with George, and I believe that’s Paul Gross doing ‘go behinds’ with george in the final minutes of ‘fantasea’ ? [the segment with the pink floyd-like [“any colour you like”] woman’s ‘vocal’. Good stuff !! [I’m sure on dvd , they’d be even BETTER…I think you get bonus George stuff on “crystal voyager” , I definately want to get that on DVD !! [I’ve got the video]

          ... hope that's helpful !

                 ben

I hope ‘state of S’ WILL tour here in west australia… I’d LOVE to see it, as well as ‘dolphin glide’… any info on that, anyone ?

chip-

any idea of how to get a copy of fantasea??i agree with dirk’s crtique of stae of s-the format reminded me of surfers-the movie.some neat stuff in it nonetheless.what i appreciate about it is it will, i think, introduce greenough to the younger crowd.

I got a copy…

I’ll make you one…

Will include it in what I return to KP…

So Matt, what in your “rare” video holdings…Hmmm…???..

some dora, perhaps?

Other than KP’s holding of D Davis via GG…???..

Hope that’s not tooooo cryptic…

sounds like you have it.did you get it from me or KP?

KP had it at Plaskett…

DTLine also…

Good stuff…

I added soundtrack to my copies…

soundtrack eh??? thtat would be nice, although i usually put the player on shuffle and the music usually compliments the film…

Dirk,

Thanks for coming to the show and for your feedback. You are right on the money. I have been cutting after every show as after seeing it 5000 times on the computer the response from the live audience is really telling as to where stuff is working and what needs to changed.

I added the chapters after watching it at the Belly Up and realizing that it needed work on the structure and pacing. I cut out some of the longer bits that were’nt necessary and organized it into chapters for starts.

I think that there is a strong thread that binds them all together and it will be just a matter of shaking loose some clips that don’t tie directly into the thread. These clips occur (best I can tell…) in the Chapter called the future (After Tom’s Surfing) and maybe more so in Mick’s part.

Tom’s disillusionment with the contest scene/ stardom ties in pretty neatly to GG’s thoughts on contests and commercialization. So I think it’s mostly in the chapters mentioned above.

Thanks again for coming and if you have any specific suggestions on the structural changes that could be made, please let me know!

Brian

PS Thank god we had more people on Friday! I was a little rattled by that first show and it was a relief to have a full house the next day. Thanks again for your support!

Brian Nice Job I enjoyed the movie.

I would have liked to seen it(that’s a twisted para-statement).To bad I live so far that I’m just out of bounds…But that’s life!

I gotta make some time this winter and go up the coast to SB and visit.

KP up for some waves later ?Herb

Any chance of State of S coming to Hawaii? Surf night at the local independent theater at the end of the month is going to play Singlefin Yellow, Brokedown Melody, Sprout, and that one about the tidal bore in Argentina… If it’s not coming, any idea when the DVD will come out?

mahalo…

I watched it at the La Paloma (Encinitas) and enjoyed it…especially the opportunity to watch some flowing, edge-control maneuvering, speed-maintaining surfing (e.g. GG) vs the current more abrupt, accelerate/decelerate, style that seems to be so prevalent.
