StepChild

specs: surf small SD mush; surf head high+ fun; paddle well; be solid; fit in a rental(6’10"); be a single fin; float a 6’2" 185lb person; be a great travel companion

result: The StepChild

info: ask Steve Brom

Singles are OK.

You’d get the same thing in a 5’6" x 22 fish package, twin, 2+1, or quad.

ouch…did you say the SAME thing? close maybe, def not the same.

“SAME”…as in high performance board made for SD waves, knee to just overhead.

Just about anything works, but maybe you get a coupe rental car. Shortest is handiest.

Broms solution for the surfer with a small car. Once again he is pushing surfboard design limits. For those of you who have not seen this board its crazy. Great logo design as well.

Here are some pictures of Brom’s new creation, The Step Child. Just as Tim mentioned, the criteria being able to fit in a rental car and ride a variety of summer waves in San Diego while on business.

Tim - your board is on the right, Steve’s personal on the left w/ the killer pins.

SidiasX must be Tucker…fishmon extraordinaire

Is that a knee paddle patch on the red board?

Looks like a mini Con UGLY…UGLY!!!

I like the templates of the RonJon kook boards much better.

Looks don’t matter, of course, if it surfs well, but looks you gotta LOOK AT.

I’m sure Brom might take that as a compliment as he used to shape Con Ugly’s for Con… also; this board is only 6’ 10”, not something that you have ever seen. My reaction at first was Wow, also. Some of the lightweight longboard guys have tried it out on R&D runs. We’ll see.

As far as Ron Jon is concerned, bla, bla, blaaa – delam - trashcan

EP------ Very Trippy Board! I once built a 7’10 for a guy and did the same thing. I used a template off an old Hansen Doyle proto-type. Big and full just like Broms’. I think I used that Clark Syd Madden blank for the one I did. Barely got the template on it. 6’10 is really pushing it . Wonder what blank gave birth to this thing? McDing

Dude…

Board # 110 something was a 5’4" x 23" single fin with a 20" nose and 17" tail at 2.85" thick, rounded pin tail, for Greg Raymond (RIP) back in 1974! The nose did not have squared off ugly corners, either!

I didn’t say RonJons were any good, or bad. Just the template is much smoother, more flowing, more pleasing to the eye that that square nose abomination.

Tim already has few twin keel fish, including a Frye and a Brom, I think…

Brom is a Master. I really like his shapes, this reminds me the Walden CD, but with straighter lines, sure it’s faster.

The curvy line on the tail sims like must turn really nice.

Can you answer me some questions?:

How does this boards ride? are they loose “enough” for small mushy waves?

What kind of fin are you going to use on this surfboard?

Thanks!

hoping to pick it up in 2 weeks in santa barbara – then road test it in california

steve suggested either the farberow 10" or the greenough paddlefin -

i’ll prob try an assortment – from the two suggested to a liddle 9" to a wingnut cutaway to a lance carson – just try as many as possible

can’t wait to test ride it

Hey, I think the Stepchild looks cool- But then I am really fond of the Father-! Just came into posession of this one a short while ago- Have not had time to get to the little Repairs yet, but thought some people might dig seeing a pic or two- This has to be one of my favorite vintage nose riders-!

Steve

No Steve, the Ugly is his older brother, Stepchild’s father is Steve Brom…
