So after finishing my first board and taking it out, i am thrilled with the fact that i created a functional board. It rides just as i thought it would and now i wanna have a permanent place to create these things. Iv read all the posts on shaping rooms but i would still like some opinion on what to do. The area is about 10’x14’x8’ and I’m trying to get the most out of it. Can it double as a sanding room? Also, I’m a college student with a college budget so that means i eat a lot of pasta (ramen). Any and all input would be greatly appreciated!!! Critique and the board is also welcome, even if you think it sucks. 5’8"x 21 1/2"x2 3/4" SINGLE FIN.

i made my shaping room for myself during college. it was pretty ghetto but it worked.
for lights i just used house lamps with some home-made shades to reflect the light onto the blank. little hook lights (like the ones used for working on cars) work too, just position them at the level you want and use about four of them to light the whole blank. really though 8’ florescent tube lights are about 10 bucks a piece and the fixtures you can get for 20-25 dollars a piece.
you can make the room double as a sanding room by sectioning off part of it with 3 mil vis-kleen (painters plastic) i just made a box with it using the corner of the room and three pieces of plastic (two walls and a ceiling) staple gunned to the rafters. ventilation, however is a b**ch in there- i would HIGHLY recommend making the sanding room near a window and getting a fan and air filter.
If you’re broke and in college why worry about building a permanent space? Spend money on more blanks and glass. Maybe you can get a sponsorship from Maruchan though, put their logo on one of your boards.
Sorry i just figured out how to upload photos. Im dumb. But this is in the backyard. The support poles are distanced at 14’x10’ and the top support beam is at 8 feet high

Well I plan on being at this house for 3 more years for one. And i shape in my garage but it gets all over my roommates car. so thats starting to get annoying (the foam or the roommate, right?). And i hate when people come over and start touching and picking up finished blanks. AND trust me, im spending every last dollar on blanks and glass!!! (I buy ramen in bulk now). I dont know why more people wouldn’t wanna shape their own boards
If you’ve got a decent climate just shape outside under your cabana there. Build a shapers rack where you can change the top to use for glassing also. Put up some shelving in your garage to hold your blanks and make a big sign regarding the consequences of messing up your stuff. If you worried about a mess while mowing foam outside throw up a tarp around the area while doing that and shop vac it up afterwards.
