Stringers

Just Joined the forum but I’ve been lurking around for a few months now utilizing all the info from the site to start building my own boards. I just got a blank to start building a longboard. I want to add two more stringers to the board and make it a tri-stringer, however, i am having a seriously hard time finding a source for two more stringers. I would prefer a place that i could go and pick them up but if i had to order them im not opposed to that either. Type of wood doesnt really matter to me. It would be cool to use an indigenious wood from New England, but not very particular. If anyone can offer me any advice i would really appreciate it. I have tried searching the archives and havent found any useful information. Thank you.

Don't want to discourage you but its tricky. If you're handy with wood, and have lots of tools go for it. Check out the "Bing pipeliner thread" for pics on how to do it. Bear in mind the guy who posted the thread has a high level of patience, woodworking/shaping skills, and the right tools.

I'm with Beerfan, it is very tricky. You have to make sure your cuts are dead straight or you will have issues. Unless you have a good bench saw, it will be hard cut straight. With pu blanks you can usually order them with as many stringers as you like. EPS, I order it in 2 or 3 pieces and glue the stringers to the nice straight factory cuts. Thats not to say it cant be done.

Most timber yards should be able to help you out with timbers and they would probably have a nice machine to plane down to your required thickness

Good luck

Cheers

Are you in New England?

If so I can help you out. I am in RI and do lots of stringer work in my boards. Just glued up a semi-gun with 5 stringers today. Its easy if you have the right tools.

The question is…why do you want to add stringers?

If it is for performance, there are easier ways to modify the performance without adding stingers.

If it is just aesthetics, take a 3/16" router and route two grooves (1/16" deep) down the length of your board, slip in a wood veneer strips then glass it.  easy schmeezy.

If you just like the challenge…then you got one.

If you want to add weight, just put more cloth on your board.

I am in New England. and my whole problem is i dont really have the right tools which is why i think im finding this to be a little harder than i expected. I built my first board with not much care and it came out good and it was a great learning experience (first shaping first glassing etc.) but now that im moving on to shaping my second board i want to take my time and make sure things come out right so if you could help me out with that Kevin that would be cool. Hit me up and let me know.

Inlaid stringers at 3/16w x 1/16 deep would be tricky to do. I would go deeper vs width. A 1/16 wood strip is going to act up when you try to set it flat in the groove. Probably get all ornery once the resin hits it, too. I’d be more inclined to go 3/16 w x 3/8 d.

you’re right, good advice
