Done the classic way: sanded hot-coat, brushed colored gloss resin, light sand, clear gloss, finish sand and buff:
seems like painting on the board after sealing it would be alot easier then sanding and recoating. but does it turn out as nice as the other ways mentioned earlier?
as clean and as sharp?
I did this basket case restoration in full color. All these stripes were done on the sanded hoat coat, then gloss. Red, White, Blue
double clear gloss, yes?
I suspect you apply the second gloss while the first is still gelled
or do you wait and sand the first coat? then apply the second
this is good to know
I would love to work with you sometime
great respect for your work, Vader

i just reread my post and realized that i left out a step. after the lam cured, i squeegeed a thin layer of lam resin where i was going to lay the stripe to give me a smooth surface.
thanks for your input. the next time i will do it on the sanded hot coat.
by the way, i enjoy your blog.

Actually brasco, i’ve wondered about doing it that way for boards that i don’t want to gloss/2nd hotcoat. hows it turn out? Pix?

it came out ok. i think next time i will try the advice from the guys and do it in the hot coat to compare the two. as far as pictures, i neglected to take any before the board was picked up, but the customer was stoked so i guess i did ok. like i mentioned, i didnt have anyone to show me the correct way to do it and just did my best to figure it out. will post back again after i do the next one on the hot coat, but the general concesus seems to be that i did it bassackwards.
the one comment i will make, is that it didnt have the “floating” look to it. i guess thats because i didnt have the layer of hot coat underneath it. oh well. live and learn as they say.
