Stubby hulls

I’ve got a 6’5 Greenough template that someone gave me and a 6’2C Clark blank. I was thinking of making a 6’ hull ala the hulls George made for Ted Spencer (pic’s of him surfing Lennox in an old Surfer’s Journal). Moderate hull, slightly concaved deck, round and thin rails, some nose rocker and little tail rocker, thin overall foil, and a single box moverd forward with a flex fin. I’m not sure where the 6’5 template came from, but it is a full outline with a sort of round/arc tail and very full nose. I’m wondering how this thing might go. I’m thinking it could be surfed standup or kneeled upon? Any thoughts or advice is much appreciated. Thanks- ryan

Having just finished a version of a stubby hull, I will tell you; you need a very thick blank or a detailed custom rocker. I used a 7’3" with a custom rocker and still wished I had gone thicker. I’d go with a 9’4(?)Y (I don’t have a catalog here but its the Yater longboard blank that nets a 9’). If you go close tolerance like the 7’3" be sure you give Clark real detailed rocker directions. I wanted flat spots in the bottom and didn’t give Clark enough detail so they gave me a smooth curve (Absolutely not Clark’s fault. They’ll give you anything you want as long as they understand your wishes). My 3.5" thick design ended up at 3" after hacking out the bulge in the rocker. You might try Walker blanks as I’ve heard the density is a little more consistant which helps when you put a s-deck on the “standard foil” most blanks come with.

If you want to stand up go with a thick S-Deck (more foam more float). If you go with a concave deck, it won’t float and you’ll have to kick into waves with flippers. Bob Duncan makes his version of stand-up stubbies with a modern foil and flat deck…you won’t get pinched rails that way though…

Thanks for the input Lee. I was thinking a very shallow concave deck, but an S-deck could be the way to go. Like you said, more foam is probably neccesary to do this correctly. By the way, your edge board is beautiful! Looks like it will be super fun. Thanks again- ryan
