This board is a Russell, along the stringer running vertically is penciled in “Stussy”. Anyone know of it’s origins, a single fin probably late 70’s maybe early 80’s… thanks.
To my best knowledge, Russell Surfboards was based out of Newport Beach CA. Judging from the pic it looks like it would have been shaped in the latter half of the 70s. Shawn Stussy shaped boards for them until he went into the clothing industry.
Always heard Stussy was/is a talented shaper. He saw an opportunity to cash in and did. Urban wear from the beach. Go figure.
Howzit foamdust, Russel Surfboards is still in Newport Bch on PCH. His factory is up the hill in Costa Mesa. He comes to his house on Kauai twice a year and should be arriving in late October or early November. I have his Ph# but not an email address or I would send him a copy of this post to get his input. I will see if there is an email address but I don’t think he has a website. His shop is one of the last pure shops that only sells boards and his T’s,wax and leashes. Aloha,Kokua

Cool thing about Stussy is when he cashed in he was not the slightest pretensious about it. He loved boards and surf related art, but his clothing was all fashion and he made no bones about that fact. In some sects he is pretty high fashion…on New York scene.
Stussy definitely shaped for Russell in the early eighties. I had one that he shaped that was very similar. 411 the shop, its still there on Newport blvd. Newport Beach, Ca. Jeff Timpone and Bruce Jones also shaped boards for Russell in those days. If you did not ask, you would not know who was going to shape your board until you picked it up. All great shapers in those days, so you couldn’t really lose.

wow, i had no idea that “Stussy” had any real correlation to surfing.
as far as i knew “Stussy” and “Mossimo” is just what the rich preps
that lived on the hill all use to wear.
I think Mossimo is from Newport also. I do not know if he surfed though.
Thanks for the info, the serial # is 007. Might be a very early board of his.
