Styrene Monomer to Gloss Resin Ratio

How much Styrene Monomer should I add per volume of Gloss Resin for applying pinlines or applying a section of tint? Thanks.

Mike: The addition of styrene to any polyester resin is primarily as a thinning agent. The styrene evaporates over time and you have to replace it particularly if your resins sit for any length of time. Is this what you are adding the styrene for? cleanlines wrote in the pinlines discussion: Yep you can use styrene to thin any resin…the problem here is trying to explain just how much.If my resin is fresh I usually dont thin it.I suggest that you do some testing.I you were in my shop could walk you through it. Be carefull with styrene…it’s really toxic…one little drop will raise a bubble on you skin if you don’t get it off.ouch.

I go completely in the opposite direction, don’t thin resin for pinlines. If you want clean lines, allow the resin to thicken up before applying it to your board. Thin resin has the capability to creep under tapes and bleed or leave fuzzy edges. Brush thin, set off slower and have an extremely clean, fine sand job under what you are working on.

By all means be careful around styrene,it is a cancer causing carcenogen(spelling)
