summer AND 'daylight saving'

yep , our first [official] day of summer here two days ago [december 1st] .

And today is the first time in fifteen years that daylight saving is being re-tried [and they are trialling it here for three years , apparently!]

Now …

WHEN will Queensland adopt it , I wonder ? [At the moment , my mates on the N.S.W / Qld border can celebrate new years day twice at midnight, by travelling 10 minutes south then north … how WEIRD is THAT, eh ?! ]

next question …

HOW do I set the clock on my computer one hour ahead ? [I use mozilla firefox , if that has any importance on it?]

cheers

ben

Just double click on the time display on you desktop, and it should open your calendar/time thing.

You can change it from there.

Or go Start → Control Panel → Time and Date to get the same thing.

Thats assume your running windows.

Theres settings in there for time zones that you can play with, and automatic syncronisation with an internet time.

Not sure if it’s smart enough to figure out the new auzzie daylight savings tho…

Kit

Edit: oh yeah, lets hear a big scream of joy for SUMMER! yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees! Bring it on.

Don’t bother with the clock. You’ll just have to set it back latter.

And I thought we were the only ones who didn’t do daylight savings. We don’t change our clocks but everyone else does. Makes it difficult to keep track when calling long distance.

thanks KK !

…well, THAT was easier than I expected !

[And now , to get my ‘swaylocks forum’ time right , I simply set it at “17 hours offset” [ahead] of west coast america time …sheeesh …“easy” , eh ?!]

cheers

Howzit punasurf,Actually there are 3 states that don’t use daylight savings,Hawaii, Arizona and another 1 on the East coast. There used to be a county in 1 of the midwest states but I think they now use it.Aloha,Kokua

Hey there Kokua,

For the “US”, Daylight Saving Time is NOT observed in Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and Arizona. The Navajo Nation participates in the Daylight Saving Time policy, even in Arizona, due to its large size and location in three states.

I like to build surfboards. Just wanted to pull this thread back to surfboards.

I hate this daylight savings crap. Why can’t those lazy farmers just get up an hour before everyone else? My teachers allways hated it when I showed up an hour late to class anyways…

Speaking of school, do the schools in OZ have the northen hemospers “Summer break” during your summer or your winter? …When I get around to taking over the world, I’ll put us all on “SET” or “Standard Earth Time” and end the madness.

“Speaking of school, do the schools in OZ have the northen hemospers “Summer break” during your summer or your winter?”

q: for ‘Rhino’

[let’s see WHAT they teach you in school nowadays …]

when it is summer in the NORTHERN hemisphere , WHAT season do you reckon it is in the SOUTHERN hemisphere ?

ben

…therefore , if it is WINTER in the NORTHERN hemis… etc

Day light saving is the biggest piss take ever, when it switches over you think your getting an extra hour, what you don’t realise is that is it take you an hour to re-set all your clocks.

Of course it’s winter chipper, but I was asking if the school takes off 3 months in your summer or your winter.

Q: For chip

What I’m learning in School…

Can you tell me what a mesopelagic invertebrate is (you’ve got plenty of them over there) and/or what semi-diurnal migration is?

…without Googles help please!

decembe5r to february summer school holidays here

now name the 50 states and capitals of usa , as I had to do here in my aussie primary school , when I was just 11 years old . [1972]

after that ,

the states and capital of each state of AUSTRALIA , if you will , please ?

[hint : there are less than 50 , and yet Australia fits within the usa in area]

cheers

ben

ok, you win : )

I did not know that Oz had states…

Daylight savings has always been an energy conservation measure, never about farmers except as urban legend.

And the energy conservation is pretty straightforward and significant.

I, for one, support our daylight savings overlords.

Indiana used to be an exception. When I went to college in Missouri, there was some difference there, may have been county-by-county, but can’t really remember (1968, and my dorm fellow was in the candy trade:)

Ask 5 bureaucrats about the justification for “Daylight Savings Time”, and 5 different answers will materialize. In my neck of the woods, the claim is usually for the safety of kids waiting for school buses. The “energy savings” claims only work if one assumes that no person, company, or organization would make any adjustment to their schedules to reflect the changing daylight period. That is imo a totally bogus assumption. The claim could as easily be made that folks in Fairbanks, Alaska need government-mandated clock and calendar adjustments to cope with polar night. The adoption of DST (1917) in the US was apparently part and parcel of the political initiative to create Time Zones (1918), and that was rank corporatism undertaken for the benefit of the railroads. For those who actually think that “Daylight Savings Time” actually conserves daylight (nobody at Sways, but I have found them elsewhere), I’m selling a book of plans for making any length of rope, string, or cable longer by cutting off one end and tying it to the other :->

That won’t be easy, as it wasn’t surf related in the first place. However, here is my best effort, based on the first sig:

"“If I squat low enough , the fish will get some speed , and the wave will technically be chest high…”

My buddy gave up stand-up surfing for kneeboarding years ago. When I ask him how the waves were where he surfed, the answer is invariably “overhead”…

People do not turn their lights on until the sun goes down.

Taking an hour of sunlight before MOST people get out of bed, and shifting it to the time of day when they are at home after work and still awake, provides an additional hour of light to people. An additional hour you do not need to turn on the lights at home. An additional hour car headlights do not need to be used.

The energy used to light things only when the sun is down is significant.
