Sun Screen

Did anyone find good sunscreen yet that dosent come off in the water and accutly works because i burn fairly easy and everything I try doesnt work

Aloe Gator Gel

I guess zinc would be better but I find aloe gator to be very good. IMO

…Hawaiin Tropic 70 Ozono

Most of the sunscreens on the market are full of carcinogens, which in our opinion explains why the incidence of skin cancer and sunblock use have both increased.

Best to make your own zinc block

If you would like a recipe let me know, it’s published here somewhere I think.

.

Actually the best sun screen I’ve found is from New Zealand! I used to use Alogator but since finding the NZ stuff that’s all I use. I compete in triathlons that last 2-11 hours, I put the sun screen on once, swim, bike and run in minimal clothing and just a nice tan, no burn!

Description…

No actual name on it…It comes in a blue bottle. on the front it has a small logo (yellow flower) with little printing under

         'Cancer Society'

         Broad Spectrum

    2 hour water resistance

           SUNSCREEN

             spf 30+

On the back at the bottom it says it’s made in Australia for Cancer Society of NZ Inc. P.O. Box 10847, Wellington, NZ

www.cancernz.org.nz

I usually get it by having a friend that’s going over there get me a few bottles.

there are better, more expensive options…

but for a cheap sunscreen you can get anywhere, nothing is better than Coppertone Sport. i get spf 48 or 50-something. it’s very non-greasy, so i’m not afraid my board is going to slip out of my hands as i’m walking to the beach. and it stays on well in the water. i’ll go out for 3 or 4 hours or more and all i get is a nice tan…never a burn.

Desitin works just fine. 40% zinc and some cod liver oil!!!

Smells like shit, makes you white like powder and smears all over the place but it works.

Its funny that in Indo no one cares about looking cool. I’ve seen guys with so much zinc on their face they looked like a clown without the red nose. You almost never see that in Southern California. I saw Gerry Lopez out at G-land a few years back wearing a pair of old ski goggles to protect his eyes from the sun. I guess it is hard to look like a dork when you are slotted in a double overhead pit. You feel kind of silly wearing goggles and face paint when it is two feet.

The one thing I don’t enjoy about surfing as I get older is the burning feeling as the sun goes through whatever I’ve used after a couple of hours. Also squinting into the sun while surfing in the morning (East coast Oz).

I recently bought a Protecsun bucket style surf hat and it is bloody great. Slaughters all the rest and I can stay comfortable so so long and see into the glare better as well.

My mate lost his crappy peak hat a few days before he was going to G land and so I gave him mine to take.

He’s got a solar panel for a sex machine (bald patch) and so I took pity on him.

When he got back he simply gave me the money to buy a new one because it was so good. He’s had a heap in the past and I’ve seen him lose 2 on different occasions when surfing a local point at only 5 foot. He had G land at 4-6 and reckons that hat never looked like abandoning him.

I just got my new one in the mail which is a baseball type but with mesh uppers on the chin strap which come down over the ears. I’ve already had a lump cut off one ear and it hurt like hell.

Hope this helps. They have a website.

I get Camo Bucket hats and Caps from Army surplus stores - cheap, cheap, cheap!!!

The buckets I use a shoelace under the chin, the caps are mesh and float.

Best thing is when you duckdive the water runs over the peak and not in your eyes.

Also bought some really cheap polarised sunglasses/goggles ($40AUS) but have a lot of trouble with water beading on the lens, it’s like having Fly eyes.

I’ve tried dishwashing liquid and Rainex - works for about 15 minutes then fogsville…

…might look like a stooge but I bet no one called Gerry Lopez a dork - not in Big Wednesday anyway.

The one thing I found with all the bucket hats are that the sides flop down when wet and so screw up your peripheral vision. The Protecsun doesn’t do it.

To help get rid of the fogging just pop the sunnies lenses out and grind 1/2 a doz semicircles around the lenses with a dremel or small drill bit. See the Oakley ones they sell for mega bucks to see what I mean.

You’re not supposed to use Rain X on plastics and poly-carbonates just glass. I noticed that on the bottle just after I used it to coat my motorcycle helmet visor. LOL.

Now back to sunscreen. Banana boat sport and zinc is a good combination.

On the rare occasions when the UV is Up thats what I use, I like zink in green.

I used to use Banta spf 35, very good but it ran out and I’ve not seen it on sale hear since.

Actually some of the surfshops give away free sachets good quality sunscreen so if I’m feeling cheap I grab a load.

And, don’t mistake the Desitin for toothpaste! Yuck!

zinka thick white war paint (zinc oxide goo) put it on thick and take a tube out with you

bridge of the nose/forehead/cheeks anything thin skinned and acting as a reflector/absorber

hats helps as do googles but they has a tendancy to be distracting

or

try bio-astin pill from the big island

word in the lineup outhere among the hardcores is that it prevent a sunburn from the inside out…

most hardcores are warpainted out here especially the lifeguards and regulars

Doc Martin’s is the stuff.

The guy is a surfer in Hawaii and a skin doctor. Pretty good qualifications in my book.

I’m pretty fair and I’ve had excellent results with it.

It doesn’t wash off and doesn’t get in you eyes when you put it on. I’m a chrome dome so you know I need it.

Mahalo, Rich

I was a lifeguard and swim instructor for 10 years. I’ve tried just about everything. The best product I’ve found, next to zinc, is water babies. The stuff stays on all day. The only downside is the baby butt smell.

they have head hunter here in San Diego, I use that, it has 3 hour staying power in the water. . . but it takes a a thick application or several to get the true ghost faced surfer. It rubs easy in the first 30 mins, but after that is harder to rub off.

What’s that sound? Sort of bubbly, underwater…shark voice…“MMmmmmmmm, cod liver oil!!!”

the desitin works great for sun protection, but has a tendency to scar your eye’s, how do I know… great swell, ditched work, blazing sun, forgot sunscreen, doctor friend recommends desitin as a joke (more zinc than zinc???), poor results, short session.
